Installation Instructions:

  • For installation instructions in specific Power Macintosh systems, visit the OWC Tech Center.

Mac OS System Support:

Supported without any drivers or patching software required when running Mac OS X 10.3.5 and later!

Compatible with any Power Macintosh G3, G4 or G5 system with an IDE interface. Some older systems will not be able to burn discs at full speed due to a slower system bus or IDE bus. Highly recommended for any G4 or G5 system.

Works perfectly with iDVD!

  • PC System Support:

Compatible with any PC system running Windows 2000 or later with an IDE drive interface. Please see your burning software application manufacturer's website for specific support of this drive mechanism.

  • What is a DVR-127D?

This Apple/Pioneer DVR-109 drive has a factory OEM Apple firmware revision which reports under Mac OS X as a DVR-127D for full native support under OS X 10.3.3 and later. This firmware revision supports up to 8X DVD burn speeds and does not have dual-layer burn support. Prior to OS X 10.4 'Tiger', Apple did not support 16X DVD or and speed DVD Dual-Layer Support.

If you are using OS X 10.4.3 or later, the full up to 16X DVD Burn and up to 6X DVD Dual-Layer burn speed capabilities are easily enabled with a simple firmware update which takes less than 1 minute and need be performed only once.

The script, available here, will flash this drive to the latest official v1.58 DVR-109 firmware revision which provides the full available feature set, including the continued Apple Native OS X support under 10.4.3 and later.

Note: **This firmware update is specifically for use with the DVR-109 drive being offered here and will not work with any other drive model. Attempting to use the OWC provided update script on any other drive may result in irreparable damage to said drive**

Many thanks to Las Vegas, for his work on the OS X native (PPC & Intel!) version of DVRFlash, and the entire team at RPC-1.org for their work!

Why would I want to update to the DVR-109 firmware from the Apple original DVR-127D?

    You gain:
    • The ability to burn DVD-R and +R discs at 16x speed
    • The ability to burn Dual Layer (DL) discs

    You lose:

    • Apple native support in any OS previous to Mac OS X 10.4.3. This is generally not a detriment as Apple does not support DVD burning at higher than 8x and does not support Dual Layer burning in these previous OS revisions.
