Virginia Tech's G5 Cluster
By Steve Manke

If you were one of the first to order a dual 2GHz G5 from Apple following its release, you were no doubt troubled by a delay in its shipment. This year, at Macworld SF 2004, Steve Jobs publicly explained the delay. Virginia Tech had contacted Apple with an order for 1,100 dual G5s that they intended to cluster. Apple agreed, and the first 1,100 shipping G5s were allocated to fill that order.

While this might have been a minor annoyance to those of us who were itching to get our hands on Apple’s latest and greatest, it was an issue that the brass at Apple had to weigh. Needless to say, they made the call and the first shipping dual G5s became members of the 3rd fastest computer cluster known to exist.

The fruits of this decision were presented at Macworld via a video presentation. Checkout this link and download the video!
