Can I use a newer Thunderbolt (USB-C) device with my older Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 (mDP) Mac?

One note: When connecting a newer Thunderbolt (USB-C) device to an older Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 (mDP) Mac, the device must be a self-powered. Bus-powered devices are not supported via the Apple adapter.

    Can I use an older Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 (mDP) device with my newer Thunderbolt (USB-C) Mac or iPad?

    YES

    If you have older Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 (mDP) drives, docks, and displays, you can keep using them with your newer Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) equipped Mac or iPad. You will need a certified Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 (mDP) Adapter which can be used bi-directionally – meaning it can also be used to connect an older Thunderbolt device to your newer Thunderbolt Mac or iPad. It's an easy way to extend the life of your older Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices!

    One note: When connecting an older Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 (mDP) device to a newer Thunderbolt (USB-C) Mac or iPad, the device must be a self-powered. Bus-powered devices are not supported via the Apple adapter.

    Thunderbolt 2/Thunderbolt compatibility requires a certified Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 (mDP) adapter and a Thunderbolt 2 cable. This configuration provides data transfer at Thunderbolt 2 speeds (up to 20Gb/s) but does not support notebook charging.
