OWC FIREWIRE ONLINE MANUAL
INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the world of FireWire, brought to you by Other World Computing!
We thank you for your purchase of your new OWC MERCURY FireWire drive and are happy to provide you with one of the newest, fastest, and easiest ways to add mass storage to your Macintosh.

BENEFITS OF FIREWIRE

Why chose FireWire? The answer is simple: Speed, speed, and more speed. With transfer rates up to 400Mbps, FireWire has more than 30 times the bandwidth than USB, which makes the perfect choice for high-speed storage and serious video capture uses. Add to that incredible ease of installation (no jumpers, ID switches, or terminators to worry about), support for up to 63 devices, and hot-pluggable connectivity. It’s easy to see why FireWire is the choice of the future for your Macintosh peripherals.

INSTALLATION OF YOUR OWC MERCURY FIREWIRE DRIVE

1. Inspect your package to see that all items have arrived. Inside you should find your OWC MERCURY/MERCURY PLUS FireWire drive, and one FireWire cable.

2. Plug in your FireWire drive, power it on, and start up your Macintosh.

3. Your OWC MERCURY/MERCURY PLUS FireWire drive ships pre-formatted and ready to go. Once booted, locate the icon labeled "OWC MERCURY", and you are ready to go!

TECH TIPS AND TROUBLESHOOTING

If your OWC MERCURY/MERCURY PLUS does not mount from time-to-time, you may have to "jump-start" it. Follow these steps to do so:

1. Close all open applications, leaving your Macintosh on in the Finder, and power down your FireWire drive.
2. Unplug the FireWire cable from the rear of the drive while allowing the drive to spin down completely.
3. Power the drive back up and wait 5-10 seconds or until the activity light goes out.
4. Plug the cable back in. Your drive should then auto-mount. If it fails to do so, call OWC Tech support at 815-338-8685 or e-mail us at hdtech@macsales.com.

Multiple device use
Adding more than one FireWire device can be done in two ways. If your computer has more than one FireWire port, you can use the extra port for an additional device. For additional devices you can "daisy-chain" them. When "daisy-chaining" it is recommended that you use the power cable and independent power supply built in to your OWC MERCURY/MERCURY PLUS to power your drives, rather than using a powered FireWire port.
