I purchased a Newer Technology G4/533 ZIF module and am having difficulty setting the dip switches for my system. How do I do that?

To set this ZIF up to use with your system, please follow the included instruction manual to install the ZIF into your machine. For configuration of the DIP switches, refer to this chart::

Beige G3 - Desktop, Minitower and All-In-One:- 533MHz
#1 = on, #2 = on, #3 = off, #4 = off

Blue & White G3 / G4 “Yikes” systems: - 500MHz
#1 = on, #2 = off, #3 = on, #4 = on

The entire product setting sheet can be downloaded here. (PDF, 70k, Adobe Acrobat required)

What are the known incompatibilities with the Crescendo/PCI G4 700 and 800?

While this new G4 upgrade supports virtually all clones, some PowerTower Pros have a second, very different motherboard design. The problematic version of the motherboard appears to be very rare, based on Sonnet's sales history and the number of related calls. Nevertheless, the Crescendo/PCI G4 700 and 800 are not currently compatible with this version. You can read the entire description, complete with diagram, at http://www.sonnettech.com/support/techtips/cpcitt04.html

Regarding PCI video cards, most of the Power Computing clones, as well as a couple of the Apple PowerPCs do not have onboard video, and may have come with certain cards (IX Micro Twin Turbo, IX Micro Ultimate Rez, ATI XClaim 3D, and the ATI Mach 64) installed that are not compatible. These cards are anywhere from 4 - 6 years old and have not had software or firmware updates in several years. The lack of updated software/firmware, combined with the next generation G4 chips used in these processor upgrades, results in various video anomalies. Because the problems reside in these cards' drivers, a resolution is not expected, and an alternative video solution will be required. Recommended cards include the ATI Radeon 7000 Mac edition, as well as others that continue to receive driver support from their manufacturers.

I would like to upgrade my ZIF based G3 system to use dual processors. Is that possible?

Unfortunately, there are no upgrades available that use dual processors for ZIF based systems. XLR8 shipped a very small amount of dual processor "carrier card" systems but they were not reliable and are no longer available.

Apple System Profiler is showing my new Mercury Extreme processor at a speed of X MHz, when I specifically ordered a Y MHz processor?

Apple System Profiler has trouble recognizing non-integer bus speed multipliers for processor speeds. This is generally more common in the 133MHz bus machines (Digital Audio and QuickSilver I & II), you often need to multiply the bus speed by a non-integer to reach the standard speed of the processor.

I have a Power Mac 8600 with NewerTech MAXpower 300MHz card (actually I made it run at 366MHz), and Mac OS is 9.1. I tried to install OS 9.2.1 but it didn't let me. It sure looks like this card is not compatible with Mac OS 9.2.2.

Do you know if this card is compatible with Mac OS 9.2.2 or Mac OS X? Or is there any firmware updates to make it work with these newer OS? Will I need more memory to run OS X? I have 32MB now.

Your card is compatible with all versions of Mac OS 9, it's likely that you only need to update your drivers. We have all of the drivers for your older card archived here, and if you wish to install Mac OS X, XPostFacto is the way to go for that!

And, Mac OS X recommends at least 128MB of memory to run. We offer 128MB DIMMS for your system here.

I bought a G4 processor upgrade for my Power Macintosh G4 "Digital Audio" system. The upgrade runs fine but I don't have audio! After restart the sound works for a while but it quits and will not play - what can I do?

You're running Mac OS 9 - and there is a known problem with processor upgrades installed in that system. The issue does not happen with every logic board, and there does not seem to be a discernable pattern to the issue but if you're bitten by it, there are two solutions. First, the most simple, is to upgrade to Mac OS X. This problem does not exist under that OS - and with your new processor upgrade there's no reason not to upgrade to the latest OS. If that's not going to happen, for whatever reason, the only other solution is to use a 3rd party PCI, or USB audio adapter card, options include PCI audio cards that deliver surround sound such as the M-Audio Revolution, or you can use any USB device that outputs audio, the most simple way is to buy a Griffin iMic, that does the job nicely.

What is the fastest G4 processor that will run in an PCI Power Macintosh with a ZIF carrier card?

G4 processors are limited to a 9x Bus Multiplier. This means that the speed of the processor cannot exceed 9 times the bus speed of the computer. The 8600 has a 50 MHz bus, so the fastest a G4 processor can run is 450 MHz. Even if you install a 500 MHz processor, it will still not run any faster than 450 MHz. However, some systems, such as the Umax S900 can run 55MHz. It’s a matter of trial and error detemining the limits of your exact system. Once you"ve found that limit, you may want to "back off" a step or two in the overclock to give a margin of error, just in case.

Can I put the processor from my AGP G4 into my Beige G3?

No. The AGP G4 has a different type of processor connection than the G3's ZIF connection. However, if you are upgrading a G4 PCI Graphics machine "Yikes", you can use the old processor, as long as they are both ZIF processors.

Does the "Apple System Profiler" improperly report L2 cache on upgrade cards, or are the XLR8 and Powerlogix cache control softwares incorrectly reporting that they have enabled the L2 cache?

Apple System Profiler does NOT report the L2 cache correctly on most processor upgrades. The cache software provided by XLR8, Powerlogix, and Sonnet, is accurate. Also, NewerTech’s Gauge Pro will properly report L2 Cache size (under Mac OS 9), it is avaialble for free download in the OWC Tech Section here.

I just installed a processor upgrade in my Power Macintosh 7600. When I start the computer, the fan turns on, the light comes on, but the screen stays dark. What can I do?

Your system most likely needs a logic board reset performed on it. Follow these steps:

Unplug your computer.
Push the power button on the front of the case 2 or 3 times.
Open the case and remove it’s PRAM battery.
Leave the battery out for at least 10 minutes.
On your logic board there is a small reset button, usually a square metal block soldered to the logic board with either a brown or gray button inset into it. Press the button using a ball point pen and hold it for 5 seconds.
Replace the PRAM battery, reassemble the system.

My old XLR8 processor isn't working.

XLR8 was bought out by Daystar Technology several years ago. For information regarding any XLR8 products, you may want to check out their website here.

I took OS9 off my machine and am running only OS X. How do I upgrade my firmware so that I can use my processor upgrade?

Unfortunately, in order to upgrade the firmware, you will need to have a bootable version of OS9 on your computer. This is a limitation in the way the firmware updaters are set up by Apple.

How can I tell which processor will be the fastest for my machine?

OWC offers benchmarking results of most of our processors in each machine. Simply choose your machine, which processors you would like to see timed, and the tests you would like to compare. You're sure to make the most informed decision on your processor choice with this handy tool.

I have a GigaDesigns 1.2GHz processor upgrade, and the jumper settings included in the manual don't work at the speed they are supposed to. What are the correct jumper settings for my card?

Some of the very first 1.2GHz GigaDesigns processors shipped with an incorrect page in the manual. To view the jumper settings, you can either view them online (72dpi) by clicking here, or download a high quality PDF to print out by clicking here (778k, 300dpi, Adobe Acrobat required)

I have a Power Macintosh system that came from the factory with dual processors. Can I utilize two of your OWC Mercury Extreme G4 processor upgrades in my system?

If your Power Macintosh was originally shipped as a dual processor from Apple, it has a single card with two processors on it. The original dual CPU card is removed from your system and the OWC Mercury Extreme single processor card occupies the slot. It is not possible to utilize two OWC Mercury Extreme processors into your system.

My G4 AGP Processor Upgrade won't let my machine go to sleep / deep sleep! What can I do about it?

There are no hard answers as to why some systems will not allow deep sleep to function when upgraded, many companies have thought it to be a problem with the ROM on the logic board from Apple, others have blamed it on 3rd party RAM or PCI cards installed in the systems. OWC's own Mercury Extreme processors are not exhibiting any of these sleep issues, but some cards from PowerLogix, GigaDesign, and Sonnet do. This is a note that was posted on XLR8YourMac.com on 06/11/03, and it may help you.

Tip for Deep Sleep/Wake from Sleep OS X Problems - For those that have problems with deep sleep/wake from sleep in OS X even with the original CPU module a reader sent a tip that may be a solution. (Note this will probably not help if the issue only occurs when the upgrade's CPU speed is overclocked to where the L3 cache bus speed is running over spec. I noted that issue in a past Giga Designs G4/1.25GHz review here - at 1.33GHz the L3 cache bus speed can exceed the spec limit of the 7455A CPU and cause a wake from sleep problem. Reducing the CPU speed (to default) or using a 3rd party L3 cache config utility to reduce the L3 cache speed can help with that issue)
Here's the reader mail on the tip:

" Maybe this is not news but I thought my powerlogix 1.2 ghz upgrade was the problem of my no deep sleep issue. Well I was surfing apples pages in there forums and found out that there is an invisible file that deals with deep sleep in os x.
The persons post said to delete the
"com.apple.Powermanagement.xml "
file in this directory
"Macintosh HD/private/var/db/SystemConfiguration"
Well at first I could not see this directory as it is hidden. I used tinkertool to make the directory visible. But it would not allow me to delete it. So I booted under root user and used tinkertool and deleted the file. ( If you have an OS 9 bootable Mac, you can also just reboot to OS 9 and which avoids permissions issues. For FW800 macs that can't boot to OS 9 - see this Apple kbase doc on how to enable root user in Jaguar.-Mike )
Guess what It works!!! For the first time in a year I can actually put my machine into deep sleep! I let it sit overnight and it came to life with one push of any key.
Apparently the poster said that this file becomes corrupt and causes in my case the monitor not to wake up.
My machine is a G4 Sawtooth
Powerlogix 100 1.2 Ghz upgrade
Siig 133 Hardware raid with two maxtor 80 gig drives
30 gig boot drive Maxtor and 60 gig 4th drive Maxtor as well
Ati Radeon 8500 64meg
M-Audio Revolution 7.1 Sound Card
Orange Micro Fast SCSI Card
Airport Card
The reason I list all the hardware is because it does work with deep sleep. I have tried all the fixes that have been published but this is the only one that worked for me.
Shawn Freebairn "

This tip may also help those that have noted wake from sleep problems even with stock CPU modules.

I need to reset the CUDA switch on my logic board. Where is that button at?

There are so many logic board configurations it's difficult to list them all. Apple's own tech manuals on their website don't even show the location of this switch.

To identify what the CUDA switch looks like, view this picture.

It's a good idea to examine your logic board with ample light, and you may want to take the opportunity to clean out dust any lint from your system while you have it open. It always seems like the switch is obscured by lint and that makes it much more difficult to view. Look toward the edges of the logic board, outside the outermost PCI slot on some systems, etc. It's easy to miss upon brief inspection.

Which direction do I need to insert my new ZIF processor into it's socket? The ZIF is square and seems to not be keyed to fit one direction only.

If you look closely at the ZIF socket, you will notice that one of the corners is solid, rather than having a hole for a pin. On the processor itself, there is a corresponding corner without a pin, when all the other corners have one. This ensures that the ZIF can only be seated in one direction - by lining up the corner without a pin with the corner without the hole. Some ZIF sockets even have an angled corner just like the ZIF processor does to aid in identification for this proper orientation.

To view a picture of a ZIF with the orientation mark shown, click here.

Apple's website states that processor upgrades aren't supported. Will my processor upgrade work in Tiger?

Yes! Apple states this so that they will not have to support any 3rd party products, but all of the accellerator upgrades we carry have been tested to work 100% under Tiger.

Your jumper sheet says to put the jumpers on these particular numbers. How do i do that?

To each jumper number, there are a pair of metal pins. The jumper itself is essentially a piece of plastic with a small metal piece inside. When this jumper is set over both pins, a circuit is closed, much like turning "ON" a light switch. When the jumper is only on one pin or removed entirely, the circuit is open, like turning the switch "OFF". So if you are to put jumpers on, for example, Jumpers 1, 3 and 5, the jumper should be on both pins of the pairs numbered 1,3 and 5, so that they complete those circuits. The jumpers for 2 and 4, in this example, can be put on ONE of the pins of each pair or be removed entirely, as those circuits need to remain open.

Why does my Sonnet processor show as 1.2GHz processor in OS X, but only 600MHz processor in OS 9?

Apple System Profiler is unable to report the correct processor speed sometimes. If you wish to view the correct speed, you will need to use the Sonnet Cache softwate that shipped with your Sonnet accelerator. If you do not have this software, you can download it from Sonnet's website.

I use Final Cut Pro and when I installed my new processor upgrade, Final Cut Pro won't launch. Why?

To remedy this situation, read this article.

Everytime I try to update my firmware on my Mac for DUAL G4-7455/DUAL G4-7457 the processors I get an open firmware Macboot prompt:

When you boot the machine, hold in the programmers button and press the powerbutton. Hold in the programmers button until the long tone stops, then release the button. Immediately press the "C" key on the keyboard and hold down until you see the firmware update screen. Next follow the instruction provided with the processor.

After installing my Mercury Extreme, my machine crashes or Kernal panics.

  Try these Steps in order:
1) Run included resets in manual (NVRAM,PRAM, and S1 reset).
2) Remove all PCI cards and have installed only your largest newest ram module.
3) Download and install systemload run at 100% load for 2 hours. This will tax the processor and should determine if it's a problem with the processor and not another component.

I just bought a zif processor and there were no jumper settings included. How do I set the speed?

The zif upgrade uses firmware to set the speed, there are no jumpers that need to be used.

I have an older Newertech product(pre 2002), are there any updates for OSX?

These product no longer support or updates for OSX. Some of the older software and instructions were saved and can be located under our tech center.

I have a Quicksilver 2002, do I need to update the (firmware)?

No, the firmware on the Quicksilver is already up to date.

I installed my zif processor, but the heatsink seems to be on at an angle or it's overheating.

Make sure that the heat sink clip is on correctly. The clip offset and should be installed so the clip side with the hole is facing the jumper blocks.

I can't get the firmware for my PowerLogix processor to update correctly off the software disk you sent me.

This can be a tricky process if you don't do it exactly right. You first need to put in the Powerlogix Firmware CD. Next, you need to shut down the machine with the CD in it. You first need to press and hold the programmers button, then turn on the machine. Wait until you hear the long tone stop, then let the machine restart. Once the machine restarts, hold down the C key and let the machine boot to the CD. From here you should be able to select the appropriate option for your processor.

My Mercury Extreme is reporting as 0mhz in the System Profiler. Is this normal?

In a machine with a 133MHz bus(Digital Audio, Quicksilver), the processor speed is a half speed multiplier of the bus. Apple System Profiler does not report these half step multipliers correctly. This is normally not an issue unless you use a program that requires exact processor reporting such as Final Cut Pro. The only way to get it to report a speed properly is to adjust the switches and move it to a full step multiplier using one of the settings in the instructions that came with the processor for installing.

Does my machine's firmware need to be up to date to run a Gigadesigns processor?

Yes, like any other processor upgrade, you must have the latest firmware update from Apple for a Gigadesigns processor to function correctly in your machine.

My Blue and White beeps five times on boot up with my new processor upgrade installed. What did I do wrong?

You need to unlock the ROM on the Blue and White so it can use a G4 processor. The updater can be found here.

I have to upgrade the firmware on my machine for my new processor card. Do I have to have OS 9 installed to update the firmware on my Mac?

Unfortunately, all of the older firmware updates must be installed from OS 9. You must have it installed on your hard drive and you must boot into OS 9 for the update to run correctly. Only recently did Apple start writing firmware updates for OS X.

Do you have any processor upgrades available for powerbooks?

We do carry some processor upgrades for the older G3 powerbooks, but currently do not have any for the Titanium or Aluminum machines.

I get a boot chime, but nothing happens after I have installed my PowerLogix processor.

There are a few things you can try to correct this.

The first couple things to try is zapping the pram and reseting the nvram:

Try pressing the S1 button located on your logic board for a second. It is usually located near your battery and is a small round silver button on an upraised square. If you have two buttons like that it will be the one closest to the battery.

Sonnet requires UNI version 7 for using their dual processors with my AGP Graphics (Sawtooth). How can I check which UNI revision I have?

Sonnet has instructions for checking the UNI number in OS 9.

Why do I get 5 beeps when I install the G4 processor zif in my B&W?

Originally when the B&W machines were released their ROM was locked by Apple to not work with the G4 processors. Before installing the new processor you will need to enable the ROM to recognize the G4 processor. Go Here and download the B&W G4 enabler. After you run that it will unlock the ROM so you can install the G4.

I purchased a G4 processor upgrade from you and am having trouble booting or my system is unning very unstable. What's wrong with my processor?

Many times the processor itself is not the culprit. Please try the following suggestions on getting your new processor card to work. These instructions are not brand specific.

1. Update your computer’s firmware. If your computer is a Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics), Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) or Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio) machine, you must make sure the firmware is up to date at v4.2.8. With the processor upgrade card installed, outdated firmware can prevent the computer from booting up, or cause instability during operation. QuickSilver models already have up-to-date firmware, and should not be affected by this issue.

2. Reinstall Mac OS 9. Do the problems occur only when the system is booted in OS 9? If so, and the problems don’t occur in OS X, how was the OS installed? It's possible to use installation CDs from a later machine to install OS 9 to an earlier machine. Doing so may result in the wrong ROM file being installed on the older computer; this will cause instability with the new G4 chip. If this is the case, you should reinstall Mac OS 9 from either the system’s original CDs, or from a retail version of Mac OS 9, and then update the OS to 9.2.2. For more info on updating the ROM file go here.

3. Update the firmware of any PCI adapter card installed in your system. Certain older PCI video cards (for a second monitor perhaps) may have outdated firmware on them that is incompatible with the new G4 chip. SCSI cards with outdated firmware and/or software are also likely candidates. To resolve the issue, you should reinstall the original processor, download any software necessary to update the PCI cards’ firmware, update the firmware, and then install the Encore/ST card again.

4. If a software disk was supplied with the processor, please make sure you've run the istaller program. For Sonnet and OWC Mercury Extreme processors: Simply open and run the program provided on disk. For PowerLogix processors: perform the following steps with the *original* processor installed.

  • Make sure that you have the latest Apple firmware for your computer. You can find the latest version of the firmware and installation instructions here .
  • Once you have updated to the latest Apple firmware, put the Powerlogix CD in the drive, then shut down your computer and let it set for approximately 10 seconds.
  • Hold in the Programmer's button (the indented one) on the front of the computer, and push the power button. You should get a long tone. Immediately as the tone ends, release the programmer's button and hold down the "C" key on your keyboard. If you performed the step correctly, you should boot to the Powerlogix firmware updater - Black text on a bluish background. If not, try it again.
  • Select the option to install all updates. If you have the latest firmware, and you held down the programmer's switch properly, the firmware should install. If not, you will need to repeat the previous steps.
  • Once you have updated the firmware, select the option to shut down.
  • Once the computer shuts down, you may then install your Powerlogix processor.

After installing the latest Mac OS X update the Powerlogix CPU Director isn't working. Where can i find a Update?

While we do test CPU director with the latest developer releases, the final public release is often different enough to require a change in CPU Director. We work on these updates to get them out to you as fast as we can. When the updates to CPU Director are completed you will be able to download them here.

Please, which one of dual processor upgrades can I use in my Dual 867 MHz MDD G4 with 133 Mhz bus ?

At this time there are no processor upgrades for the MDD, the only solution is to look for a used stock processor from the MDD models. Our clearance page from time to time has used stock processors. The highest speed for a MDD is a dual 1.42GHz model.

Why do some of the Sonnet Encore sawtooth g4 processor upgrades come with a cooling system and some don't?

This all depends on how Sonnet has tested and developed their product line. Some may require a fan due to heat produced, and others may be efficient enough to run with just a heat sink.

Do you sell upgraded processors for the iMac G4?

We currently do not carry any upgrades for the g4 iMac’s.
