If you have an older G4 tower, a few hundred bucks and a high comfort level for tinkering inside a Power Mac, you can get your machine back rolling at present-day standards with the Other World Computing Mercury Extreme G4 1.25GHz processor upgrade. The board fits all G4 towers but the original PCI Graphics G4s. We had to first boot our test AGP Graphics G4 into OS 9 and update its firmware from Apple’s Web site. Then after about 15 minutes with needlenose pliers and a screwdriver, we were able to replace the original processor with the Mercury. With a little patience, you too can have a sputtering G4 tackling newer, more demanding software.
