An old, dual-monitor problem . . . sorry |

I apologize in advance for bringing up an old old problem. I am taking Jonck at his word that you won't mind (much) answering an out-of-date question. I know that this was dealt with way back when, when XPF appeared and we were all trying to get things straighted out. I'm still on the old hardware, with the old problems, 'm afraid. What I have: a 180mz 7300 with 256 RAM and an ATI XClaim PCI card. X is on a second hard drive in the Mac. Am up to 10.1.5. I everything runs fine. The problem: Recently, I began using two monitors in 9.2.2 (am using OS9Forever to run 9.2.2 outside of X and Classic on the other hard drive). That runs fine. But when I use XPF to boot into X, with the two monitors running, I get a kernel panic. If I unplug the second monitor, which is running from the original video port of the 7300, then X boots fine. I remember there being much discussion of two monitors in X early on. But I can't remember if there was an insight available, which I'm currently lacking. So the question is: with 10.1.5 and XPF (the latest, 2.2.5?) using a standard 7300 with a ATI XClaim card and the standard video port of the Mac, is there a trick to using two monitors in X? Thanks for your patience and forbearance! Alarik |

Still no luck, I'm afraid. Sort of problem, in itself hardly vital, that requires endless tinkering (not to mention ruining the cable interface!). |

Many thanks, NarratorDan. So far as I know, the video output is already set to the built-in video. The booting occurs on the monitor attached to the Mac's built-in video and that's where I witness the kernel panic. In 9.2, the video and main monitor is the one attached to the PCI video card. ? I'll try verbose booting and resetting things (in reverse). Not that I know how to do it! But, hey. And thank you again. |

First, make sure that you have one of the monitors set as the main out put for OSX. When you use XPF select the "open firmware" menu and set the "out-put" to the built in video. Later you can choose the main monitor in OSX, doing it this way solved a few issues for me when I was using a dual monitor setup with an 8500 +radeon. Also, make sure that you set "in-put" to keyboard just to clean up any loose ends, I also had fewer problems after I did that. NarratorDan |
