Aura for 2013 Mac Pro: 10.13.4 and Later Install Issue

Please note that currently, it is not possible to install macOS 10.13.4 or later onto a new Aura for Mac Pro, using the standard macOS installer process. This includes upgrading from 10.12 or earlier using the App Store.

This issue is not specific to OWC hardware. The host computer requires an internal drive with an EFI partition that is compatible with this specific OS and later versions. If the host does not detect this specific setup, the installed drive will be visible in the installer, but not available as a target disk. In the case of the Aura SSD, the host sees this as an external drive, rather than an internal drive. Apple is aware of this issue but we do not have an ETA for a potential fix.

In the meantime, there are two workarounds that we can recommend:

  1. If you have a stand-alone installer for macOS 10.13.3 or earlier (for example on a USB thumb drive), you CAN use the normal installation process with your Aura SSD.
  2. If you do not have an installer for 10.13.3 or earlier version of macOS, it is possible to install 10.13.4 or later using the macOS Disk Utility Restore function (steps below). At this time we do not recommend third party cloning apps.

System Restore Steps

  1. If your Apple SSD has not been updated to 10.13 or later yet, back up your drive then update the system to 10.13.x as a first step, using the App Store 'Updates' process.
  2. Shut down your Mac Pro, then disconnect the power cable and all peripherals. 
  3. Install your new Aura SSD into the Mac Pro according to the installation manual or video.
  4. Install the Apple SSD with 10.13.4 or later into the included OWC Envoy Pro enclosure.
  5. Boot to the macOS volume in the Envoy Pro enclosure.
  6. Open Disk Utility.
  7. Format the Aura SSD as a APFS volume.
  8. Right-Click on the Aura SSD's new APFS volume (not the container disk), then choose the 'Restore' option from the pop-up menu.
  9. In the dialog that appears, choose the macOS volume in the OWC Envoy (not the container disk). Click 'Restore.'

After the process is complete, you should be able to restart the system and boot to your new Aura SSD.
