Generally, the different RAID modes available in SoftRAID offer trade-offs between speed and data redundancy. For example RAID 0 trades all data protection features for the maximum possible data rates, while RAID 1 trades all speed gains for a complete set of redundant data. RAID 5 (the default mode on our ThunderBay products) takes a hybrid approach; its parity data scheme provides a means of recovering data from a single failed drive (if two or more drives fail the data can't be recovered), while still providing speed gains compared to RAID 1.
