{"id":11051,"date":"2011-07-14T08:03:31","date_gmt":"2011-07-14T13:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/?p=11051"},"modified":"2014-05-22T13:33:04","modified_gmt":"2014-05-22T18:33:04","slug":"to-trim-or-not-to-trim-owc-has-the-answer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/11051-to-trim-or-not-to-trim-owc-has-the-answer\/","title":{"rendered":"To TRIM or not to TRIM (OWC has the answer)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10664\" title=\"OWC6G_sandforce\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/OWC6G_sandforce.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/OWC6G_sandforce.jpg 280w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/OWC6G_sandforce-110x120.jpg 110w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/OWC6G_sandforce-174x190.jpg 174w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/OWC6G_sandforce-110x120@2x.jpg 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>Before we get started talking about TRIM and why you should or should not enable it, let\u2019s just grab a little background, so everybody is roughly on the same page.<\/p>\n<p>When you simply \u201cdelete\u201d a file on a traditional hard drive, it\u2019s not really \u201cerased.\u201d Instead, its location on the drive is reported to the OS as \u201cempty, even though the ones and zeroes are still there, ready to be overwritten.\u00a0On SSDs, however, overwriting data can take a considerably longer time than writing to \u201cunused\u201d space. \u00a0As solid state drives became more affordable, the TRIM command was introduced to facilitate \u201cgarbage collection\u201d of deleted data, allowing the SSD to reset those \u201cunused\u201d blocks back to an \u201cempty\u201d state. This allows for better performance for many SSDs.<\/p>\n<p>With OS X Lion right around the corner, there\u2019s been a lot of talk about its potential TRIM support. As of right now, there is some basic TRIM support for Apple-branded SSDs in the OS, but third-party vendors are largely left out of the deal. There have been murmurings of a utility in Lion that will support all SSDs officially, and there have been several hacks to try and enable TRIM for all SSDs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have an OWC SSD, though, you don\u2019t need TRIM.<\/strong> The SandForce controller in our SSDs takes care of this \u201cgarbage collection\u201d as well as performs various other tasks that keep your drive running at optimal speed, without the drop-off that you see with other brands. Especially note <a href=\"http:\/\/macperformanceguide.com\/SSD-RealWorld.html\">page two of this performance testing expert&#8217;s report<\/a> where he feels so strongly about TRIM&#8217;s inefficiency that he calls call it &#8220;half-baked&#8221;&#8230;and that&#8217;s the kid friendly version of the phrase.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <strong>enabling TRIM could actually <em>hurt<\/em> the performance and reliability of your OWC SSD, rather than <em>help<\/em> it. <\/strong>As OWC customer Scott Gosling recently said in an email to us,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI used the trim enabler 1.1 initially, then realized that your self maintenance was far superior to using TRIM so I disabled it. It made a huge difference in terms of reliability.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Our in-house testing has also shown that the TRIM Enabler hack has proven to be unreliable.
