Had the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Higgs_boson\">Higgs boson<\/a>, the yet-to-be-observed subatomic particle thought by some to endow other particles with mass (prompting the nickname of \u201cGod Particle\u201d), finally been found?<\/p>\n<p>Well&#8230; kind of&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement said that CERN\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/atlas.ch\/\">ATLAS<\/a> experiment showed a statistically suspicious increase in activity that indicates the Higgs could be pinned down with a mass of 126 giga-electron-volts, and the independent <a href=\"http:\/\/cms.web.cern.ch\/\">CMS<\/a> experiment found a possible result nearby at 124GeV. But while both experiments see a similar signal, the observed particle decay events could have occurred by chance so this isn\u2019t yet a discovery.<\/p>\n<p>In simple English, that means that they saw something, they have a good idea where to look for it again, but they haven\u2019t <em>quite <\/em>nailed it down yet. Oh&#8230; and it may have just been a fluke.<\/p>\n<p>Even if this signal <em>isn&#8217;t<\/em> from the Higgs, both experiments narrowed down the range in which the Higgs particle could possibly show up. A Higgs in this mass range would likely require new physics beyond the Standard Model \u2014 which describes the interactions of all known subatomic particles and forces \u2014 in order to be stable.<\/p>\n<p>Over the coming year, more experiments with the <a href=\"http:\/\/lhc.web.cern.ch\/lhc\/\">Large Hadron Collider<\/a> will nearly quadruple the data currently gathered, which will give about a 15% boost in data quality.<\/p>\n<p>In other words&#8230; it looks like we\u2019ll\u00a0 just have to <a href=\"http:\/\/chicago.cubs.mlb.com\/index.jsp?c_id=chc\">wait &#8217;till next year<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The science world was all atwitter last night about today\u2019s announcement from CERN.
