\"\"Yesterday\u2019s iPad launch gave us a lot of new features; Retina Displays, HD cameras, voice dictation, and bevy of other tweaks and improvements. However, there was one other change that nobody on stage really called a lot of attention to: the name.<\/p>\n

Similar to its iPhone brethren, when the iPad moved to its first major update, a numeral was added to the end of the name to distinguish it from the original. We had the iPad and the iPad 2. Logically, most expected this latest update to be named the iPad 3.<\/p>\n

Au contraire, mon fr\u00e8re.<\/em><\/p>\n

For whatever reason, Apple\u2019s not referring to any numeric version for this iPad, while still referring to the previous version as \u201ciPad 2.\u201d In fact, the only moniker that Apple\u2019s applied to this latest iteration is \u201cthe new iPad.\u201d These two naming conventions were rather awkwardly juxtaposed near the end of the event\u2019s Keynote presentation.<\/p>\n

Obviously, Apple\u2019s dropping the numeric differentiator, calling future iPad revisions \u201ciPad.\u201d<\/p>\n

This got some of us in the OWC Marketing Department talking. Some liked the new naming convention; 0thers disliked it.<\/p>\n

Keeping it simple.<\/h2>\n

Some of us liked the simplification of the name. That way, no matter which iPad you have, you don\u2019t feel as \u201cout of date,\u201d even though your iPad may be a couple of years old. You\u2019re asked \u201cOooh… is that an iPad?\u201d and can answer \u201cYes,\u201d\u00a0 instead of being asked \u201cOooh! Is that an iPad 3\u201d and are forced to say \u201cNo, it\u2019s only an iPad 2.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also unifies the line, rather than splitting it up. The devices are \u201ciPads,\u201d not \u201ciPads, iPad 2s and iPad 3s.\u201d Apple\u2019s generally about simplifying things, so that sort of makes sense.<\/p>\n

Making it confusing.<\/h2>\n

On the other hand, some of us hate <\/em>the idea of having the same name across several products that may have different specs.<\/p>\n

This can make finding the correct accessories for your model iPad more difficult. The dimensions on the original iPad are quite different from the iPad 2, and the new iPad is also different. Now imagine the iPad 2 was also just called \u201ciPad.\u201d If cases were advertised as \u201cdesigned for iPad,\u201d how would you know which GripStand<\/a> (or any<\/em> case, for that matter) to get? You\u2019d have to either know what year model it was (sorry, but most of those in the iPad\u2019s target audience don\u2019t pay that much attention to what revision they have unless it\u2019s part of the name), or find out by trial and error.<\/p>\n

Plus, from a marketing point of view, wouldn\u2019t you want a name that suggests that the version you\u2019re buying is bigger\/better than the previous one? They\u2019ve done it with the iPhones; it would make sense to do it with the iPad as well. Of course, Apple being Apple, the iPhones are probably next on the list for name simplification.<\/p>\n
