It\u2019s getting warmer out. Days are definitely getting longer. The robin that smacked into my bedroom window at 7am every morning for the past month must have made itself a nest somewhere else and is likely raising a brood of window-smacking offspring. It&#8217;s the magic of this time of year. As for us, it gets us in a \u201cgreen\u201d mood\u2014one that\u2019s enhanced by the spirit of Earth Day, which was this past Sunday, so we figured it was a good time to bring you up-to-date on some of our \u201cgreen\u201d initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>In case this is your first exposure to OWC, or you haven&#8217;t read about founding principles here on the blog, Team OWC is very \u201cgreen\u201d minded. From our <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/4822-other-world-computing-awarded-leed-platinum-certification-for-attaining-highest-level-of-green-building-design-operation\">LEED Platinum Certified headquarters<\/a> to our <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/2481-owc-turbine-is-now-online-and-operational\">Vestas V39 Wind Turbine<\/a>, and just about everywhere in between, we do our best to keep our operation as Earth-friendly as possible 365 days a year. Not being ones for just resting on past accomplishments, here\u2019s just a sample of some of our newest initiatives and results.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Through our company-wide recycling efforts, <strong>we have reduced what it would have otherwise added to the solid waste stream by approximately 96%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve upgraded our warehouse automation system to one that\u2019s<strong> 50% more energy-efficient.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve installed seals on our shipping dock doors that <strong>completely eliminate \u201ccold air infiltration.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve replaced our old \u201cpetroleum-based\u201d foam cushioning with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencellfoam.com\/content\/Green%20Cell%20Foam.php\">Green Cell Foam<\/a> that\u2019s naturally anti-static, moisture-absorbing, biodegradable, \u00a0and compostable. <strong>This brings OWC\u2019s usage of curbside-recyclable shipping materials to nearly 100%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>From January to April, we\u2019ve consumed 282,335 kWh of electricity while our wind turbine has produced 291,719 kWh, which is <strong>3% <em>more <\/em>than we consumed.<\/strong> That makes OWC a net energy <em>producer<\/em>, even factoring in the substantial growth in operations we\u2019ve had since we installed the turbine.<\/li>\n<li>Our latest monthly <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/7181-other-world-computing-headquarters-earns-prestigious-energy-star-designation-from-u-s-environmental-protection-agency\">Energy Star<\/a> efficiency rating resulted in OWC scoring a whopping 94%, which is not only great for the kind of building we have, but is <em>especially <\/em>impressive when you also consider we\u2019re operating a data center in this same building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information on OWC\u2019s corporate campus, which is one of less than three hundred worldwide to achieve the Green Building Certification Institute\u2019s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum standard since the program was introduced in 1998, visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/green\/index.html\">&#8220;Green&#8221; page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And we encourage you to make your own Personal Difference to the environment today.
