\"\"Apple\u2019s latest ad campaign<\/a> extending out from the WWDC event is an identity ad that many have panned in online forums and in the media. Some take shots that\u00a0Apple is trying to hide that almost all of their products are made in China, or that the ad is bit pompous and arrogant.<\/p>\n

The simple truth is that \u201cDesigned\u201d line has been around a long time. If you read the back an iPod as far back as the original 2001 model, you would find these lines…<\/p>\n

\u201cDesigned by Apple in California. Assembled in Taiwan.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Later replaced with:<\/p>\n

\u201cDesigned by Apple in California. Assembled in China.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Back then I noticed the line right away, and I thought it an extremely smart statement. Because what it says is that there\u2019s a lot of work, ideation, vision, and flat out\u00a0creation done at Apple headquarters, and that a \u201cMade in China\u201d label simply lacks important information that should not be left unsaid.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While many other PC and iDevice makers may just pull from off-the-shelf designs, or shop designs originating from China, Apple\u2019s R&D is based in the U.S.A, and\u00a0Apple is saying there\u2019s something here that needs to be given credit.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind Apple is an R&D monolith. Heck, with all the \u201ciProfits\u201d they\u2019ve rightfully made, they\u2019ve been able to push design innovation to such an envelope that\u00a0they flat out invent new ways of metallurgy, material creation, and design that to simply say \u201cMade in China\u201d on the back gives away a lot of credit.<\/p>\n

I think there\u2019s strong merit to stating that there\u2019s something to be profoundly proud of in stating that a product is \u201cDesigned by Apple in California\u201d. I simply can\u2019t fault\u00a0Apple for saying \u201cCalifornia\u201d instead of \u201cUSA\u201d since, to me, it\u2019s OK to be proud of where you\u2019re from, where your roots are, and if it happens to be a part of the fabric of\u00a0the company and in it\u2019s in your DNA, then \u201cCalifornia\u201d is OK by me. I\u2019m looking forward to the new Mac Pro possibly saying, \u201cDesigned by Apple in California.\u00a0Assembled in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps other companies should be so bold as to give credit to where credit is due. Perhaps others can\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes this deserve to exist?\u201d<\/h2>\n

That is one the strongest key statements of the ad campaign to me. As it\u2019s more than likely that most other companies wish they could make products as good as\u00a0the ones Apple never made. The rejects, the ones Apple internally said they could do better, or far into the R&D process decided to throw everything out and start\u00a0over because it wasn\u2019t good enough. The products we\u2019ll never see, are the products the \u201cme toos\u201d wish they could invent let alone introduce as a new paradigm.<\/p>\n

That fortitude to grind forward to make something better, is the power to create a new standard, and I\u2019ll make no short measure of it, computers, portable music\u00a0players, phones, and the new tablet market wouldn\u2019t be what they are without Apple creating the products that set the bar, and showed a new way of doing things.<\/p>\n

Whether you like the ads, or consider them to self serving is your call. I\u2019m just saying there\u2019s merit to the emotional pride and and statement that it makes.<\/p>\n
