After the official release of <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/?s=High+Sierra\" target=\"_blank\">macOS 10.13 High Sierra<\/a>, NVIDIA updated the drivers for use with that system as well. For the time being the drivers are offered as a beta. That means they are not supported or recognized by Apple as being compatible with Macs or the macOS. While there is no official information we have found on the best way to set up your Mac Pro to use these cards, there are detailed sources of information online that may help you to choose the best card and get the drivers installed. Note that the following site is not affiliated with OWC, nor is any of its content vetted or supported by OWC; the link is provided strictly as a courtesy:&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/macvidcards.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MACVIDCARDS.COM<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Based on our conversations with NVIDIA, once the drivers&nbsp;and related GPU are installed in a 2009-2012 Mac Pro, it&nbsp;<b class=\"\">should<\/b>&nbsp;allow the cards to function as the main system GPU, but there are no guarantees. One caveat is that due to firmware differences (since these cards were originally designed only for PCs), none of the Mac&#8217;s &#8220;loading screens&#8221; or&nbsp;&#8220;boot screens&#8221; will be visible after you start the computer. Instead the first thing you&#8217;ll see (after a brief wait) is the macOS login screen. Otherwise the computer and GPU should function normally, with the additional caveat that these are built-for-PC cards running on macOS beta drivers and may stop working at any time, including after subsequent OS updates or the installation of other software.<br class=\"\"\/><b class=\"\"><br class=\"\"\/><\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\">For the Future<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Legacy Mac Pro users are not the only ones who can potentially benefit from a new GPU. Starting with macOS 10.13, Apple provided a beta version of its&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/development-kit\/external-graphics\/\" target=\"_blank\">eGPU technology<\/a>&nbsp; designed to be connected via Thunderbolt. This means if you have a Mac with available Thunderbolt ports (ideally Thunderbolt 3 ports), you can add select GPUs to an eGPU enclosure like the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/40681-a-new-world-of-speed-owc-innovation-on-full-display-at-nab\" target=\"_blank\">OWC Helios FX<\/a>. More details about this exciting new OWC Thunderbolt 3 product for gamers and creative professionals on Mac and PC will be provided soon.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">IMPORTANT: as of October 2017, <b class=\"\">all NVIDIA drivers and GPUs are non-functional when used with macOS 10.13\u2019s eGPU technology<\/b>. The only way to use them with an eGPU on the Mac is to try your luck with macOS 10.12.4 or later (preferably 10.12.6). A good web site to learn more about this type of setup is <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/egpu.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">egpu.io<\/a>. Note that the preceding site is not affiliated with OWC, nor is any of its content vetted or officially supported by OWC; the link is provided strictly as a courtesy.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">For now, only the AMD Radeon RX580 is designed to work with Apple\u2019s eGPU beta; hopefully more AMD will cards to follow in the near-future. If you have access to the Radeon RX570, RX480, or RX470, you <b class=\"\">should<\/b> be able to get those working with the included Apple RX-series driver as well, but again there are no guarantees. We provide this short list of GPUs only as a courtesy during the very early days of eGPU technology.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Apple is planning official support for eGPU technology in Spring of 2018. We are hopeful that the above-note NVIDIA drivers (and many others) will be added to macOS 10.13 at that time, with future GPU cards being added in future versions of the macOS.
