Since we already had them opened up for our exclusive unboxing<\/a>, we decided we might as well have a little fun with the new 2014 MacBook Pro with Retina display models after their release<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n

How much fun can you possibly have with disassembled Retina MacBook Pros, you ask? Well, we popped a 256GB SSD that was taken from a 2013 Mac Pro into the brand spanking new 13\u201d and 15\u201d rMBP models and found that the two models apparently have some extra performance capabilities to offer. The 15\u201d model clocked performance numbers that went beyond 1,200MB\/s, while the 13\u201d model exceeded 1,190MB\/s!<\/p>\n

UPDATE:<\/strong> OWC Now Offers SSD Upgrades for 2013-Current MacBook Air & MacBook Pro with Retina display models<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0OWC Reveals Apple Boot Camp Support for SSDs<\/a><\/p>\n

The performance boost over the stock SSDs in the 13\u201d and 15\u201d rMBP \u2013 which achieved up to 759MB\/s and 794MB\/s respectively \u2013 is explained by the fact that the Mac Pro SSD negotiates a x4 PCIe connection versus the stock cards, which negotiate a x2 PCIe connection.<\/p>\n
