I&#8217;ve had to manage deleting apps, photos and videos from my iPhone or else I would get a message saying I could not take any new photos or videos until I freed up some space. And this, of course, would always happen at the most inopportune times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a title=\"iTunes Magic Trick Frees Storage Space on Your iPhone\" href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/36209-use-a-jedi-mind-trick-to-free-storage-space-on-your-iphone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"bookmark\">iTunes Magic Trick Frees Storage Space on Your iPhone<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have a 64GB iPhone 5s, but I like to keep a good amount of music and games available. And I love using my camera, especially the slick slow motion video or new Hyperlapse videos. But dagnabbit, all those things eat up space fast!<\/p>\n<p>For my next phone, I will no doubt upgrade to the next available storage size, but my iPhone 5s is still in great shape \u2013 protected in a <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/Apple\/iPhone_Accessories#casess\" target=\"_blank\">KX Case<\/a> of course \u2013 and serving me well. No need to rush into an iPhone 6. Maybe I could even hold off another year \u2013 but not with the headache of juggling my data.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw <a href=\"http:\/\/verynicewebsite.net\/2014\/08\/a-tale-of-two-restores\/\" target=\"_blank\">this blog entry<\/a>&nbsp;on John Moltz&#8217;s website about how he and his wife gained 3GB and 6GB of space respectively on their iPhones just by doing a simple restore from backup in iTunes.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s so easy to do, it was worth a shot. <strong>Tip:<\/strong> Make sure you select &#8220;Encrypt iPhone Backup&#8221; so your passwords, etc. will all be retained after you restore.<\/p>\n<p>So, how did I fare?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before restore:<\/strong> 747 MB available<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26580\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver1.jpg\" alt=\"iOSSpaceSaver1\" width=\"600\" height=\"48\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver1.jpg 1331w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver1-284x23.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver1-190x15.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver1-284x23@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver1-190x15@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>After restore:<\/strong> 5.75 GB available<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-26581\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver2.jpg\" alt=\"iOSSpaceSaver2\" width=\"600\" height=\"48\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver2.jpg 1282w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver2-284x23.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver2-190x15.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver2-284x23@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/iOSSpaceSaver2-190x15@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes, I gained more than&nbsp;<strong>5 gigabytes<\/strong> of space back!<\/p>\n<p>Where did all of the free space go?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Audio:&nbsp;<\/strong>Before restore: <strong>19.76GB;<\/strong>&nbsp; After restore: <strong>19.73GB<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Photos:&nbsp;<\/strong>Before restore: <strong>7.1GB;<\/strong>&nbsp; After restore: <strong>7.11GB<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Apps:&nbsp;<\/strong>Before restore: <strong>21.94GB;<\/strong>&nbsp; After restore: <strong>19.77GB<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Docs &amp; Data:&nbsp;<\/strong>Before restore: <strong>2.92GB;<\/strong>&nbsp; After restore: <strong>2.72GB<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Other:&nbsp;<\/strong>Before restore: <strong>3.63GB;<\/strong>&nbsp; After restore:<strong> 1.59GB<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see from iTunes&#8217; storage breakdown, most of the free space was recovered from the mysterious &#8220;Other&#8221; category, which might all be iOS housecleaning, with the next biggest contributor being &#8220;Apps&#8221;. I have noticed that a few apps might have needed to re-download some cached resources after the restore, but I have not noticed any apps that did not keep my settings, logins, high scores, etc.<\/p>\n<p>My iPhone, for the most part, feels like the exact same iPhone it did before the restore, but 5 GB leaner on storage! I shared my success with OWC Larry, and he tried it the same night and sent me the following iMessage: <em>&#8220;Hey &#8211; Did your restore trick \u2013 got back about 3.8GBs! Thanks!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As always, your mileage may vary on recovered space, but if you are hitting your iDevice&#8217;s upper limit you should consider giving this a shot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>iOS 8 download&nbsp;tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/26556-ios-8-available-for-download-today\" target=\"_blank\">iOS 8 update<\/a> is going to require at least 1.4 GB of space to download and run.&nbsp;So if you are&nbsp;running low on space this might be even more effective for you to run before&nbsp;considering the iOS update.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been dealing with a problem for the past few months.
