As games require more and more space on our drives, it\u2019s easy to find your storage suddenly maxed out. And when it happens, is it time\u00a0to delete your games? Of course, not. There is a much better solution: install them on an external drive instead, freeing up your main drive for other things including more games.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may sound complicated to use an external drive to install your games, but the process is quite straightforward. In this guide, we will show you how to install games via <a href=\"http:\/\/store.steampowered.com\">Steam<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/us.battle.net\/en\/\">Battle.net<\/a> on an external hard drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Finding storage<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, you might think that it\u2019s strictly laptops that need an external game library, (such as a 128GB-equipped MacBook Air). But even on my 1TB iMac, I find myself regularly running out of storage space since I deal with so many files and games at once. Since it is also recommended to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/36924-rocket-yard-guide-how-to-optimize-your-mac-for-gaming\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep a minimum of 10% of your HD free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at all times, I have been keen to start installing my games on a drive other than my internal one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your first step toward more space is obtaining a suitable external drive for your needs. For best performance, you will want a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/external-storage?_ga=1.106402885.797027007.1335192640\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USB 3.0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/Thunderbolt\/?_ga=1.106402885.797027007.1335192640\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thunderbolt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supported drive. A USB 2.0 drive can also work, but expect longer load times and other possible hits on playability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some drive recommendations to get you started: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For desktop users looking to expand, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/firewire\/1394\/USB\/EliteAL\/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OWC Mercury Elite Pro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great place to start.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For laptop users, and gamers on the go, I recommend a \u201cmini\u201d drive, such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/firewire\/EliteALmini\/eSATA-FW800-FW400-USB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OWC Mercury Elite Pro mini<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a larger budget, I\u2019d suggest getting an SSD Thunderbolt drive. This will have nearly the same performance as your internal drive. Here\u2019s how it\u2019s done:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plug in your external drive of choice and fire up Steam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Steam Preferences &gt; Downloads you can specify an alternate library folder. Just make a new folder named SteamLibrary on your external drive and choose it. You can toggle between default libraries by right clicking on the one you want to use and selecting the \u201cMake default\u201d option. Alternately, you can skip specifying a new library folder in Steam preferences and proceed straight to the install. It will give you an option to \u201cCreate a new Steam library\u201d on your external drive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select a game to install. In the popup menu, be sure to select your new location in the \u201cChoose location for install\u201d menu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install your game as usual. I recommend using the same \u201cBlizzard\u201d folder approach as mentioned before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it!
