You\u2019ll need to properly manage them, including taking steps to make sure you don\u2019t run out of <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/external-storage\">local storage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can create<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>multiple photo libraries<\/strong> on your Mac, but you have to choose one to be THE System Photo Library.\u00a0Photos in it are available in apps like iMovie, Pages, and Keynote. You can also sync them to iOS devices and Apple TV via iTunes.\u00a0If you want to use your own images as your desktop picture or screen saver, the images need to be in your System Photo Library before you can select them in System Preferences. Plus, some Apple apps and third-party apps also access your System Photo Library using the Media Browser.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have only <strong>one photo library<\/strong>, as most folks do, it&#8217;s the System Photo Library. If you have more than one, the first photo library that you create or open in Photos will become the System Photo Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"footnote\"><strong>Related:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a title=\"How to Move Your iTunes Library to an External Drive\" href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/43972-how-to-move-your-itunes-library-to-an-external-drive\" rel=\"bookmark\">How to Move Your iTunes Library to an External Drive<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, your <strong>System Photo Library<\/strong> is stored in the Pictures folder on your Mac. If like me, you take lots of pics, a hard drive or solid-state drive can fill up easily, especially since more Macs ship with limited storage. However, you can move the System Photo Library to an external storage device. Make sure you\u2019ve backed up your photos, quit Photos, then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-two-1.jpg\" alt=\"macOS photos preferences\" class=\"wp-image-47570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-two-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-two-1-284x93.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-two-1-190x62.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-two-1-284x93@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-two-1-190x62@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Copy the Photos Library from your Pictures Folder to an external disk.<\/li><li>Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select \u201cOther Library\u201d and navigate to the new location.<\/li><li>You\u2019ll get a message that says: \u201cThis library contains items that need to download from iCloud Photo Library.\u201d<\/li><li>Click on delete incomplete items.<\/li><li>In the Photos app, go to Preferences, and under General, click Use as System Photo Library.<\/li><li>Then go to System Preferences > iCloud > Photos > Options, Select iCloud Photo Library to turn that back on.<\/li><li>Test the library. When you&#8217;re sure all is well, feel free to trash the one on your internal HD or SSD to free up space.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that, if a Photos library is located on an external drive, don\u2019t use Time Machine to store a backup on that external drive. The permissions for your Photos library may conflict with those for the Time Machine backup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/?platform=mac&amp;product=photos&amp;vanityname=create-additional-libraries&amp;version=4.0&amp;locale=en_US&amp;topicid=PHT6D60B524&amp;type=ddm&amp;platformOSVersion=10.14\">create additional photo libraries<\/a> and store them in any location on your Mac or on an external storage device.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-three.jpg\" alt=\"iCloud features for Photos are only available in the System Photo Library\" class=\"wp-image-47571\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-three.jpg 640w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-three-284x114.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-three-190x76.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-three-284x114@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Graphic-three-190x76@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do have multiple libraries, you can only work with the photos in only one library at a time. To work with photos in another library, you must <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/?platform=mac&amp;product=photos&amp;vanityname=create-additional-libraries&amp;version=4.0&amp;locale=en_US&amp;topicid=PHT6D60B524&amp;type=ddm&amp;platformOSVersion=10.14#pht6d605ea2\">switch between photo libraries<\/a>. To do this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Hold down the option key on your keyboard.<\/li><li>Double click on Photos.<\/li><li>Click on the name of the library you want to open.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you switch to a library other than the System Photo Library, the changes you make aren\u2019t reflected in iCloud Photos, because iCloud Photos only syncs changes from your System Photo Library.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that, by default, all the files you import into Photos are stored in the current photo library.
