Today we\u2019re looking at suggestions on packing your devices for physical protection, easy access, and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-tech-i-packed-for-my-trip\">The Tech I Packed For My Trip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I just got back from a 17-day trip to Alaska and Canada, and as a professional photographer and writer, my tech kit includes not only devices to write articles while I\u2019m enjoying the wilderness scenery, but camera equipment as well. There are also two items on this list that can be considered personal health devices \u2014 Oticon Opn Minirite+ hearing aids and a Philips Sonicare toothbrush. Both require charging, and the hearing aids are app-connected, so I consider them to be tech equipment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>12.9-inch iPad Pro with Logitech Slim Folio Keyboard (my \u201claptop\u201d)<\/li><li>9.7-inch iPad (my wife\u2019s)<\/li><li>An iPhone XS Max (mine) and an iPhone 8 Plus (my wife\u2019s)<\/li><li>A 6-port USB rapid charger (similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/Sabrent\/AXFLCH\/\">Sabrent 6-port charge<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/Sabrent\/AXFLCH\/\">r<\/a>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>USB-C charging cable and AC adapter for iPad Pro<\/li><li>Two Apple Watch charging cables<\/li><li>Six <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/Apple\/MD818ZMA\/\">MFi USB to Lightning cable<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/Apple\/MD818ZMA\/\">s<\/a><\/li><li>One <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/Micro%20Accessories\/USB2AMICBW\/\">USB to micro-USB cabl<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/Micro%20Accessories\/USB2AMICBW\/\">e<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A VR camera (Insta360 One X)<\/li><li>Two zippered bags containing extra SD cards, camera batteries, battery rechargers, and Lightning SD card readers (for backing up camera SD cards to iPads) \u2014 see image above this section<\/li><li>Two Canon DSLR cameras with zoom lenses and an extra telephoto lens<\/li><li>A small tripod<\/li><li>Bullet Mode handle and extending \u201cselfie stick\u201d for VR camera<\/li><li>Charger, cleaning kit, spare non-rechargeable batteries for hearing aids<\/li><li>Charger for the Philips Sonicare toothbrush (I didn&#8217;t need it; the toothbrush worked on the entire trip on one charge)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this was a tight fit in a 30-liter PacSafe VentureSafe Anti-Theft backpack. Pretty crazy, huh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-more-reasonable-packing-list-for-apple-fans\">A More Reasonable Packing List for Apple Fans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your personal list <em>will<\/em> vary from this custom list. Maybe you take \u201creal\u201d vacations and don\u2019t do any work while traveling, or you don\u2019t take photos with a DSLR or VR camera. In that case, a smaller bag with space for your iPhone, charging adapters, some Lightning cables, and earphones might do the trick. Here\u2019s a suggested packing list for most people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>iPhone (for calls, games, maps, taking pictures)<\/li><li>iPad (for reading, games, watching video)<\/li><li>Apple Watch (for tracking physical activity)<\/li><li>AirPods or EarPods (listening to music)<\/li><li>A 6-port USB rapid charger<\/li><li>Charging cables for all<\/li><li>External battery pack for emergency charging (the <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/iLuv\/MYPOWER10CSI\/\">iLuv myPower100 USB-<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/iLuv\/MYPOWER10CSI\/\">C<\/a> is a perfect choice if you have a USB-C device to charge, and can charge other devices with a USB-C to Lightning adapter)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This can probably fit into a much smaller bag like the <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/TechTent\/TS1709\/\">TechTent Polyester Laptop Backpac<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/item\/TechTent\/TS1709\/\">k<\/a> rather than requiring the \u201cbarely carry-on\u201d bag I lug around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-packing-guidelines\">Packing Guidelines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With almost 40 years of international travel under my belt, I have tried to balance what I <em>need<\/em> to have with me against carrying too much. Trust me; it\u2019s too easy to just throw everything into a bag, then regret the extra weight you\u2019re carrying. Here are some guidelines that I\u2019ve come up with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pack what you absolutely <em>must<\/em> have, not what you think you\u2019ll need<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Plan for the contingency of not having access to power<\/li><li>Consider using your iPhone as your sole camera\/video recorder.<\/li><li>Always have at least one spare charging cable, as you\u2019ll always lose at least one\u2026<\/li><li>Use small zippered bags (or even ZipLoc-type bags) to keep<u>&nbsp;<\/u>small items from getting lost<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Don\u2019t wait until the last minute to pack, or you\u2019re bound to forget something<\/li><li>Write a packing list (the Notes app is perfect for this), then go through it and delete those items you really don\u2019t need. The list can be useful before and during a trip, particularly in making sure that you&#8217;ve re-packed all your gear.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When traveling to big cities in developed countries, you will be able to purchase items that you accidentally left at home. Going to really out-of-the-way places, you won\u2019t be able to buy those items, so be sure to pack them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the photography I do, I need the variety of devices that I take with me on every trip. My wife, on the other hand, decided on this trip that the quality of photos she was getting with her iPhone 8 Plus were better than what she was getting with her somewhat dated Canon DSLR, so she\u2019s decided to forgo carrying that camera with her on future trips.
