\"\"The fun thing about software is that there is a lot going on underneath that you don\u2019t usually see. Sometimes, programmers will slip something in, just under the surface, for you to find. Sometimes it\u2019s a picture, some specific text, or even a little game. To get them, you either have to perform a specific series of steps (such as holding down certain keys while clicking a particular spot on a screen) or you have to dig through the resource forks of the application to find them.<\/p>\n

These hidden features don\u2019t usually affect the documented operation of the program; they\u2019re just a fun little surprise that\u2019s hidden for you to find, hence the name \u201ceaster egg.\u201d<\/p>\n

A number of easter eggs can be found on OS X and it\u2019s installed applications. Here are a couple that you can find easily.<\/p>\n

Hidden Messages<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sometimes the easter egg is hidden in plain sight. There are two common applications that have a large block of text on their icons: TextEdit and Keynote. If you zoom in on their icons (using the Cover Flow view works excellently here), you can see the text isn\u2019t Lorem Ipsum<\/a>, but actual words.<\/p>\n

Text Edit\u2019s icon is pretty straight-forward, it\u2019s a letter to a \u201cKate\u201d from long-time Apple \u201cuser\u201d John Appleseed<\/a>. The body of the letter of the letter itself is the text from Apple\u2019s \u201cThink Different<\/a>\u201d campaign. (Bonus points for those who recognized the font as Apple Chancery…)<\/p>\n

The text on the \u201cQ4 2009\u201d paper that sits on the podium for Keynote is a little harder to peg. Not only is it smaller (and therefore harder to read), its source is a little more obscure for most people. As it turns out, the text is actually the (slightly truncated) lyrics to \u201cThe Bitch of Living<\/a>\u201d from the Tony Award-winning musical \u201cSpring Awakening.<\/a>\u201d Not exactly a mainstream reference, but interesting none the less.<\/p>\n

Reversible Credits<\/h3>\n

Apple\u2019s iTunes has a different sort of hidden easter egg. If you go to iTunes> About iTunes<\/strong>, you will get the standard About box with scrolling credits. Now, hold down the Option key; you\u2019ll see the same credits, now scrolling in the opposite direction. Many of the \u201cabout\u201d boxes in the Adobe Creative Suite 5<\/a> applications have similar behaviors. Pointless? Yeah, but it\u2019s still neat.<\/p>\n

Secret Games<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"There are several games that can be played in the Terminal, via the built-in emacs text editor. A full list can be found by typing this into a Terminal window.<\/p>\n

In order to play one of the games listed, you need to do the following:<\/p>\n

  1. Open a new Terminal window.<\/li>\n
  2. Type \u201cemacs\u201d and hit return.<\/li>\n
  3. Press the ESC + X keys at the same time.<\/li>\n
  4. Type the name of the game you\u2019d like to play, and hit Return.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    While, these games may not technically <\/em>be considered \u201ceaster eggs\u201d (they are part of the emacs program and are covered in its documentation), they\u2019re not something that\u2019s known to most Mac users, so we figured we\u2019d cover it here.<\/p>\n
