Every now and then, I find it necessary to grab an image from a Pages or Word document. You might be lead to think that the process is similar for both applications, but they are not. In fact, this is one of the few cases where it\u2019s in some ways easier to do with Microsoft\u2019s product than Apple\u2019s. Why? I have no idea. But with Word, it is stupid-easy. With Pages, it\u2019s just plain stupid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, that wording was a little on the extreme side, but it had a nice artistic flow that I couldn\u2019t resist! The reality is that the process for exporting images from Pages isn\u2019t obvious \u2013 it just doesn\u2019t make a lot of sense to the average user. Hence this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let’s start with Word…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft Word<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With Microsoft Word, extracting and saving an embedded picture takes several steps, but at least it is intuitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To export an image from Word:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Choosing “Save as Picture” in Word allows you to export an image<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
  1. Right-click on the image.<\/li>
  2. Choose “Save as Picture…”<\/li>
  3. Choose where you want to save it, and name the file. The default name will be “Picture1.png” and not the name of the original image.<\/li>
  4. Select the type of image file you want to save it as from the “Save as Type” dropdown in the bottom left of the window. The options are PNG, JPEG, PDF, GIF, & BMP.<\/li>
  5. Click “Save” and you’re done!<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    One thing to note<\/strong> is that the image will be saved with the size (dimensions) as it appears in the document itself. Often, images are shrunk to fit particular formatting needs. If you want to save a full-sized version, you’ll have to change it before<\/em> following the exporting instructions above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To revert an image in Word to its original size:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    1. Right-click on the image.<\/li>
    2. Choose “Size and Position…”<\/li>
    3. Click “Reset” in the bottom right corner.<\/li>
    4. Click “Okay.”<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Select the “Reset” button to return an image to its original size<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

      This is likely to throw the formatting all out of whack, but after saving the image, you can merely “Edit > Undo Resize\/Move Object” or hit \u2318Z.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Mac Pages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      There are two main ways to extract images from a Pages document. The first allows you to access all the images at once. It isn’t tricky \u2013 it’s just not intuitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      To export all of the images:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Changing the file type allows you to see the package contents<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
      1. Choose “File > Advanced > Change File Type > Package.”<\/li>
      2. Open a Finder window and navigate to where the file is saved.<\/li>
      3. Right-click on the file name and choose “Show Package Contents.”<\/li>
      4. Select the Data folder.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Inside the Data folder, you will see all of the document’s images and corresponding smaller thumbnails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Now you can copy<\/strong> (don’t move) the images wherever you’d like. If you move them from the file’s “package,” Pages will not be happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Note:<\/strong> I told you the process was going to be odd.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        If you are only interested in saving one image from the document or prefer to do them one at a time, it takes a few more steps. And again, it’s not exactly intuitive \u2013 you need to use Preview<\/strong> to make it work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        To save a single image:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        Choose “Copy” in Pages to start the image extraction process<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
        \"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
        1. Select the image, picture, or photo in your Pages doc.<\/li>
        2. Choose “Edit > Copy” or \u2318C.<\/li>
        3. Open the Preview app in your Applications folder.<\/li>
        4. Select “File > New from Clipboard” or hit \u2318N.<\/li>
        5. Select “File > Export…”<\/li>
        6. Choose where you want to save the file, and give it a name.<\/li>
        7. From the “Format” dropdown menu, select the type of image file you want it saved as. The options are HEIC, JPEG, JPEG-2000, OpenEXR, PDF, & TIFF.<\/li>
        8. Click “Save.”<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Just as in Microsoft Word, you’ll notice that the image will be the size\/resolution of how it appears in the document. If you want the original size, you will need to revert it before following the instructions above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          To revert an image in Pages to its original size:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          1. Select the image.<\/li>
          2. Choose the Format tab (with the paintbrush icon) at the top right.<\/li>
          3. Select the Arrange tab and under “Size,” click the “Original Size” button.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Perhaps not many people need to save images from a Word or Pages file, which is why neither Apple nor Microsoft has made it easier (or more intuitive) to export single (or multiple) images.
