It provides easy access to many of the apps that come with your Mac. And the Stacks feature of the Dock in macOS can be a time-saver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A stack is a Dock item that gives you fast access to a folder. When you click a Stack, files, and folders within spring from the Dock in a fan or a grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>macOS starts you off with the Downloads stack. The Downloads stack contains files you download from Safari, Mail, and Messages. You can create as many stacks as you want by <strong>dragging folders<\/strong> to the right side of your Dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can change how a stack appears by right-clicking or control-clicking its icon in the Dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockStackMenu.jpg\" alt=\"screenshot of dock stack options menu\" class=\"wp-image-64848\" width=\"587\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockStackMenu.jpg 1174w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockStackMenu-142x120.jpg 142w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockStackMenu-284x239.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockStackMenu-190x160.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockStackMenu-284x239@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockStackMenu-190x160@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choose an option from the shortcut menu that appears:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Sort by<\/strong> \u2013 Select to have items sorted by Name, Date Added, Date Modified, Date Created, or Kind.<\/li><li><strong>Display as<\/strong> \u2013 Choose to show the stack icon in the Dock as a normal folder icon, or as a stack of icons representing the items the folder contains.<\/li><li><strong>View content as<\/strong> \u2013 Choose how the stack is displayed when you click its icon. Choosing Automatic lets OS&nbsp;X&nbsp;determine the best view content option based on the number of items in the stack.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stack Views<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fan Stack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fan&nbsp;stacks show a portion of your folder content and arrange the icons so that the closest icon to the Dock is based on the order of the &#8220;Sort by&#8221; option you have selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you select the &#8220;Sort by&#8221; option of &#8220;Date Added&#8221;, the Fan stack expands showing the icons of the most recently added items closest to the Dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockFanStack.jpg\" alt=\"screenshot of a dock folder showing fan stack\" class=\"wp-image-64849\" width=\"610\" height=\"643\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockFanStack.jpg 1220w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockFanStack-114x120.jpg 114w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockFanStack-284x299.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockFanStack-180x190.jpg 180w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockFanStack-114x120@2x.jpg 228w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockFanStack-284x299@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/DockFanStack-180x190@2x.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to open the folder represented by a stack, click the Open in Finder button. The Finder opens the enclosing folder in a new window so that you can work with its contents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grid Stack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Grid&nbsp;stacks show a folder&#8217;s content as a matrix of icons arranged by your &#8220;Sort by&#8221; option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grid stacks are scrollable, and allow you to navigate folders. Click a folder in the Stack to open that folder without leaving the Stack. Click the left-pointing arrow button&nbsp;that appears in the upper left of the Stack to go back to the folder you came from. If there are more icons than can be shown within the grid, a scroll bar appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">List Stack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The List creates a long list of the Stack&#8217;s files and folders. Like with the Grid, Stack folders can be accessed without leaving the List view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automatic Stack<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also an Automatic option. If you select it, a stack will open automatically to the style that best suits its size and content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"byline\">These instructions apply, for the most part, to other versions of macOS besides Catalina.
