Created by Apple and Google, an ENS lets people know about possible exposure to the virus. However, the adoption of this technology has been slow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Exposure Notifications Systems Aren&#8217;t Widespread<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, a state, region, or country must give permission to its residents to start using the system. A government needs to be able to analyze exposure data in order to react, so it\u2019s important that they have a way to use the anonymized information. More countries and states are adding systems each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, there\u2019s a lot of fear on the part of citizens that exposure notifications \u2014 AKA \u201ccontact tracing\u201d \u2014 target specific people and their locations. As a result, many people refuse to use the technology. <a href=\"https:\/\/covid19-static.cdn-apple.com\/applications\/covid19\/current\/static\/contact-tracing\/pdf\/ExposureNotification-FAQv1.1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple and Google made privacy a priority<\/a>.  Your phone creates a random time-limited ID, stores it, and sends it to the phones of nearby people.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The phones erase the random ID if you don&#8217;t get the virus within 14 days. Infected persons \u201cShare a COVID-19 Diagnosis\u201d in the Exposure Notification settings. This notifies any other person you\u2019ve come into contact with via the random ID. They never know who they got the virus from, just that they may have it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How an Exposure Notifications System works:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class='youtube-player' width='1170' height='659' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Cz2Xzm6knM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent' allowfullscreen='true' style='border:0;' sandbox='allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation'><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the iOS Exposure Notification System works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although iPhones don&#8217;t need a separate app, some regions are using them anyway. My home state of Colorado recently adopted Apple\u2019s ENS, and I didn&#8217;t need to download a separate app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your State or Country Adopts an ENS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1) You\u2019ll hear that the capability is available from regional news sources. Your state might require a separate app and iOS tells you where to get it. For regions using the built-in iOS feature, just go to Settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Android devices, you can get the appropriate app in the Google Play Store. Apps for both mobile operating systems usually appear at the same time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2) On your iPhone, launch Settings, scroll down to Exposure Notifications, and tap it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-border\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IMG_1328-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Exposure Notifications button in the iOS Settings\" width=\"355\" height=\"\"\/><figcaption><strong><em>The Exposure Notifications button in the iOS Settings app<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turn on Exposure Notifications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>3) Tap the <strong>Turn On Exposure Notifications<\/strong> button. You can add more regions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example. I tapped <strong>Active Region<\/strong> on the Exposure Notifications settings screen.  The iPhone showed that the CO Department of Public Health and Environment region is active. Open the Exposure Notifications settings and tap the &#8220;Share a COVID-19 Diagnosis&#8221; button. There are instructions to follow on what to do, which sets off a chain of events. Any phone with your anonymous ID on it receives a notification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the other case, you might receive a notification. You&#8217;ll be instructed on the next steps to follow. Those steps may include self-quarantine and getting tested if you begin to show symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Using Exposure Notifications is a good idea to help limit the spread of the disease. With the current spike in COVID-19 infections around the world, there&#8217;s no better time to start using an ENS.
