UPDATE: April 28, 2021<\/strong>
With the release of macOS 11.3 yesterday, Apple has now fixed the bug that prevented the SoftRAID driver from loading on M1 Macs. After updating to this new macOS release, the SoftRAID version 6 driver will load correctly, and you will be able to access your SoftRAID volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though we are always excited when Apple rolls out a new OS update, we are also cautious about what it means for our OWC hardware and software. Earlier today, Apple released macOS Big Sur 11.2. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of the latest changes that Apple has implemented, we advise that if you are running SoftRAID on an M1 Mac, do not install the macOS Big Sur 11.2 update<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why not? Due to certain OS modifications made by Apple, SoftRAID<\/a> will not operate properly. As always, we are working diligently with Apple’s engineers to rectify the problem and will keep you posted with any\u2014and all\u2014updates as they become available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No worries, you can revert your system to the latest version of macOS 11.1 you had installed on your system before you updated to 11.2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to revert to macOS 11.1 using Time Machine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here are instructions for using Snapshots to revert macOS to a prior version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note:<\/strong> When using this method, any changes made to user files will be reverted to their previous states before updating to 11.2. As the name states, it is a “snapshot” of your entire system at the specific point and time you choose to restore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Shutdown your M1 Mac<\/li>
  2. Restart and hold the power key until you see \u201cLoading startup options\u201d<\/li>
  3. Click on \u201cOptions\u201d and “Continue”<\/li>
  4. Click on your startup volume<\/li>
  5. Select your admin account and enter password<\/li>
  6. Click \u201cRestore from Time Machine\u201d<\/li>
  7. In the info window, click \u201cContinue\u201d<\/li>
  8. In the \u201cSelect a Restore Source\u201d window, Select your startup volume and click \u201cContinue\u201d
    (This brings you to the “Select a Local Snapshot\u201d window)<\/em><\/li>
  9. Select the desired Snapshot
    (Generally, this is the last Snapshot on the list, i.e. you need to select the last Snapshot with 11.1, which will revert the system to this point in time)<\/em><\/li>
  10. Click Continue, and affirm again by clicking \u201cContinue\u201d<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The system will automatically restart and startup from the restored Snapshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We continue to work closely with Apple engineers on the macOS bug, which prevents the SoftRAID driver from loading on M1 Macs running macOS 11.2. We are testing each beta release of macOS 11.3 as it is released. Unfortunately, our development agreement with Apple prevents us from reporting the results of these tests.

    The good news is that many members of our     support forum<\/a> test each public beta of macOS 11.3. These users are posting their test results immediately after Apple releases each public beta. We closely monitor these posts and relay these results as soon as they appear (usually within a day after testing the developer beta).

    Our users have confirmed that macOS 11.3 beta 2 does not fix the bug that prevents the SoftRAID driver from loading. I am hoping that this fix will appear in the third beta release of macOS 11.3.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Users on the SoftRAID support forum report that the SoftRAID driver loads correctly after they have installed the most recent public beta of macOS 11.3.  All of the users on the support forum who have installed macOS 11.3 beta 3 have reported that they are able to install the SoftRAID driver and mount SoftRAID volumes.

    We believe that there may still be problems with loading 3rd party drivers on macOS 11 but these problems only arise when there is more than 1 startup volume connected to an M1 Mac.  These problems appear to be caused by a bug that occurs when macOS 11 is updating its driver cache on M1 Macs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
