You can read all about how to do this <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/65910-enable-mac-send-receive-sms-mms\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the steps in that article, and you\u2019ll generally have no issues. However, when I upgraded to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/mac\/m1\/\">M1 Mac<\/a> (the 13-inch MacBook Pro), my Messages app became ornery and wouldn\u2019t allow me to send messages, though I could receive them with no problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing to do is what you should always (well, almost always) do if you\u2019re having issues. After quitting Messages, <strong>Restart your Mac<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sign-out-of-messages-then-sign-in-again\">Sign Out of Messages, Then Sign in Again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If rebooting your Mac doesn\u2019t work, sign out of Messages, then sign again. There could be a problem between the app and your Apple ID, and this could resolve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Go to Messages &gt; Preferences &gt; iMessage.<\/li><li>Across from your Apple ID account, click &#8220;Sign Out.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iMessage-SignOut.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iMessage-SignOut.jpg\" alt=\"iMessage preferences\" class=\"wp-image-72062\" width=\"612\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iMessage-SignOut.jpg 1224w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iMessage-SignOut-284x119.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iMessage-SignOut-190x79.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iMessage-SignOut-284x119@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iMessage-SignOut-190x79@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Confirm you want to sign out.<\/li><li>Wait about 30 seconds, then enter your Apple ID details, and sign in to iMessage again.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-check-your-apple-id\">Check Your Apple ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While you\u2019re at it, make sure that your Apple ID details are the same on your Mac and your iPhone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On your iPhone, go to &#8220;Settings &gt; [Your Name].&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"284\" height=\"245\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid-284x245.jpg\" alt=\"Example iPhone AppleId settings screen\" class=\"wp-image-72064\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid-284x245.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid-139x120.jpg 139w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid-190x164.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid.jpg 1284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid-284x245@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid-139x120@2x.jpg 278w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/iphone-appleid-190x164@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Does the Apple ID account at the top of the page match what you signed into on your Mac? Great! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If not&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Scroll down and tap <strong>Sign Out<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Tap iCloud<\/strong> then turn on the option for Messages.<\/li><li>Go to &#8220;Settings &gt; Messages.&#8221;<\/li><li>Turn on <strong>iMessage<\/strong> at the top of the page.<\/li><li>Check to make sure the contact details in <strong>Send &amp; Receive<\/strong> are correct.<\/li><li>Go into<strong> Text Message Forwarding<\/strong> and turn on the option for your Mac.<\/li><li>Turn on the option to <strong>Send as SMS<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Try sending an iMessage or text message from your Mac again.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These steps did it for me. If you\u2019re still having problems, there are two final things to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lock-and-unlock-the-keychain-access-app\">Lock and Unlock the Keychain Access App<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple\u2019s Keychain stores passwords and other vital info on your apps and certain processes. It\u2019s very convenient, but some of its files can get corrupted, including those of Messages. It could help to lock and unlock Keychain on your Mac. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Press <strong>Command + Space<\/strong> to open Spotlight and search for the <strong>Keychain Access<\/strong> app. Hit&nbsp;enter to open the Keychain Access app.<\/li><li>From the menu bar, go to &#8216;File &gt; Lock Keychain \u201clogin.\u201d&#8217;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/keychain-access-login.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/keychain-access-login.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72065\" width=\"612\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/keychain-access-login.jpg 1224w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/keychain-access-login-284x119.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/keychain-access-login-190x79.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/keychain-access-login-284x119@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/keychain-access-login-190x79@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wait a couple of minutes, then go to &#8216;File &gt; Unlock Keychain \u201clogin.\u201d&#8217;<\/li><li>Enter the administrator password on your Mac and click OK.<\/li><li>Try sending an iMessage or text message from your Mac again.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"footnote\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> If the option to lock your &#8220;login&#8221; Keychain is grayed out, check its settings in &#8216;Edit &gt; Change Settings for Keychain &#8220;login&#8221;&#8230;&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reset-your-preferences-for-messages\">Reset Your Preferences for Messages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s one more thing to try before contacting Apple\u2019s tech support: <strong>delete some plist files<\/strong>. A plist file is a settings file, also known as a \u201cproperties file,\u201d used by macOS applications. It contains properties and configuration settings for various apps. Sometimes they can get glitchy and have to be deleted, so a proper list can automatically replace them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-quit-messages-then\">Quit Messages, then:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>From the Finder, hit <strong>Command+Shift+G<\/strong> to bring up Go To Folder and enter <code>~\/Library\/Preferences\/<\/code>.<ul><li>If you don\u2019t see iChat or Messages plists, change the display to sort by list, then click the \u201cDate Modified\u201d option to sort the plist files by when they change.<\/li><li>Open Messages and select &#8220;Messages &gt; Preferences&#8221; from the menu bar.<\/li><li>Check and uncheck an option or two while watching the ~\/Library\/Preferences\/ folder.
