If you use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icloud.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iCloud<\/a>, much of this is done behind the scenes. However, about once a month, I manually sync my devices just in case something goes wrong with iCloud storage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-connecting-your-iphone-or-ipad-to-your-mac\">Connecting your iPhone or iPad to your Mac<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do this by connecting an iPhone or iPad via a USB or USB-C cable. (Sadly, depending on what model of Mac, iPhone, and\/or iPad you have, you may have to fork out for an adapter or new cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The iOS\/iPadOS device will pop up in the Finder sidebar. Select it, and a Finder window will open with options for managing your iPhone\/iPad and syncing items with your Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"footnote\"><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> don\u2019t confuse the Finder with the Desktop. The Finder is the first thing that you see when your Mac finishes starting up. It opens automatically and stays open as you use other apps. It includes the Finder menu bar at the top of the screen and the&nbsp;Desktop&nbsp;below that. The Desktop is the space where you see file, folder, and application windows.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1.png\" alt=\"iPhone mounted in macOS Big Sur Finder\" class=\"wp-image-72873\" width=\"596\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1.png 1192w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1-174x120.png 174w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1-284x196.png 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1-190x131.png 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1-174x120@2x.png 348w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1-284x196@2x.png 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sync-devices-1-190x131@2x.png 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, if you\u2019re using a Mac laptop connected to an external monitor such as an LG UltraFine 5K, or LG UltraFine 4K, you should connect your iPhone or iPad to the Mac itself, not the display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve connected the device, you may be asked if you \u201ctrust\u201d the iPhone or iPad. Trusted devices can sync with each other, create backups, and access your device&#8217;s photos, videos, contacts, and other content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you tap Trust or if you get the spinning ball\/circle of death :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure that your computer has the latest version of macOS or the&nbsp;latest version of iTunes.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Disconnect and reconnect your&nbsp;iPhone or iPad from your Mac and restart both devices.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If this doesn\u2019t work, go to <strong>Settings &gt; General &gt; Reset<\/strong> and tap <strong>Reset Network Settings<\/strong>. If you have an iPod&nbsp;classic, iPod&nbsp;nano, or iPod&nbsp;shuffle, you have to sync your device with your Mac if you want to add content to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely, if you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you only have to sync with your Mac when you have new or updated content. If you prefer not to sync, no problem.
