My love of all things retro got the attention of another fan of ancient tech history, <strong>Niles Mitchell<\/strong>. Mitchell goes well beyond my simple experiments and has become the world&#8217;s leading expert in mixing old tech with new. His <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/napabar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Will It Work? YouTube channel<\/a><\/strong> is quite popular and shows his prowess at making tech from different generations work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest video from Mitchell features an app called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/idos-2\/id918131840#?platform=ipad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iDOS 2<\/a><\/strong>, available on the App Store for $4.99. This emulator runs many old DOS apps on iPhone or iPad. You read that right: <em>DOS on iPhone or iPad<\/em>. In a recent email, Mitchell told me that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I\u2019ve been messing around with the iDOS application from the App Store.&nbsp;It\u2019s a DOS emulator that lets you side-load software from the Files app. I\u2019m actually quite surprised that Apple approved this app. You can literally side-load thousands of DOS applications and games.&nbsp;It\u2019s very unlike Apple to allow this!<br \/><br \/>So, it was designed for people to download software to the Files app, then side-load from there. Got me thinking about maybe using the original retail media that these games came on back in the day\u2026like the actual floppy and CD-ROMs sold in stores.<\/p><cite>Niles Mitchell, email to Steve Sande dated 3\/30\/21<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-default\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dos-on-iphone-the-video\">DOS on iPhone: The Video <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The end result of his experimentation and previous work was this video. It describes the methods used to side-load software from both floppy disks and CD-ROMs, then run it under iDOS 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class='youtube-player' width='1170' height='659' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iyDg5DOxcTI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent' allowfullscreen='true' style='border:0;' sandbox='allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation'><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretty incredible, isn&#8217;t it? I&#8217;ve never been much of a gamer, but I&#8217;d love to fire up an ancient copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multiplan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft Multiplan<\/a> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microsoft_Project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MS Project<\/a><\/strong> just to remember how we have it in the 2020s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone interested in running vintage apps on iPhone or iPad should subscribe to Mitchell&#8217;s YouTube channel.
