A disk image (.dmg file) is a file that looks and acts like a mountable device or volume.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-disk-image-and-why-should-you-care\"><strong>What is a disk image and why should you care?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a disk image is usually a copy of a certain optical media, but you can also create a disk image from your hard drive or a USB flash drive. One image can be put on several Macs.<\/li><li>They\u2019re convenient for incremental backups since you can make as many different images as you want.\u00a0<\/li><li>Images are saved as files. If you want\/need to keep data from a Mac, you don\u2019t need to keep the actual hardware around. Just create an image of that drive and store it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-creating-a-disk-image\"><strong>Creating a disk image<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Mac\u2019s Disk Utility \u2014 which is found in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder on your Mac\u2019s drive \u2014 you can create a disk image that includes the data and free space on a physical disk or connected device, such as a USB device. For example, if a USB device or volume is 80GB with 10GB of data, the disk image will be 80\u00a0GB in size and include data and free space. This is the name that appears in the Finder, where you save the disk image file before opening it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Click the Format pop-up menu, then choose an option:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Read-only<\/strong>: The disk image can\u2019t be written to, and is quicker to create and open.<\/li><li><strong>Compressed<\/strong>: Compresses data, so the disk image is smaller than the original data. The disk image is read-only.<\/li><li><strong>Read\/write<\/strong>: This allows you to add files to the disk image after it\u2019s created.<\/li><li><strong>DVD\/CD master<\/strong>: Can be used with third-party apps. It includes a copy of all sectors of the disk image, whether they\u2019re used or not. When you use a master disk image to create other DVDs or CDs, all data is copied exactly.<\/li><li>To encrypt the disk image, click the <strong>Encryption<\/strong> pop-up menu, then choose an encryption option.<\/li><li>Click <strong>Save<\/strong>, then click <strong>Done<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Disk Utility creates the disk image file where you saved it in the Finder and mounts its disk icon on your desktop and in the Finder sidebar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-create-a-secure-disk-image\"><strong>How to create a secure disk image<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use the Disk Utility in macOS to create a secure disk image for confidential documents that you don\u2019t want others to see without your permission. With Disk Utility launched:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Choose <strong>File > New Image > Blank Image<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Enter a file name for the disk image, add tags if necessary, then choose where to save it. This is the name that appears on your Desktop and in the Finder sidebar.<\/li><li>In the <strong>Size<\/strong> field, enter a size for the disk image.<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Format<\/strong> pop-up menu, then choose the format for the disk: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Encryption<\/strong> pop-up menu, then choose an encryption option.<\/li><li><strong>Enter<\/strong> (you\u2019ll have to do this twice) a password to unlock the disk image, then click Choose. Make a note of the password and save it somewhere handy. If you forget it, you can\u2019t open the disk image.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Use the default settings for the rest of the options:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Click the <strong>Partitions<\/strong> pop-up menu, then choose <strong>Single Partition &#8211; GUID Partition Map<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click the <strong>Image Format<\/strong> pop-up menu, then choose \u201c<strong>read\/write<\/strong>\u201d disk image.<\/li><li>Click <strong>Save<\/strong>, then click <strong>Done<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As before, Disk Utility creates the disk image file where you saved it in the Finder. It mounts its disk icon on your desktop and in the Finder sidebar. In the Finder, copy the documents you want to protect to the disk image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to erase the original documents so they can\u2019t be recovered, drag them to the Trash, then choose <strong>Finder > Empty Trash<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re done using the documents on the secure disk image, eject the disk image. As long as it\u2019s available on your Desktop, anyone with access to your computer account can use the docs on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To access the data in a disk image, <strong>double-click<\/strong> it. It appears on your desktop, and you can add, remove, and edit files on it just as you would with a disk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-restore-a-disk-image-to-a-disk\"><strong>How to restore a disk image to a disk&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You can also use the Disk Utility to restore a disk image to a disk. To restore a disk image with a single volume to a disk:<\/li><li>In the sidebar, select the volume that you want to restore, then click the <strong>Restore<\/strong> button or choose <strong>Edit > Restore<\/strong>.
