This can help if you\u2019re experiencing some hardware or software issues and are trying to figure out what\u2019s wrong. (On Intel Macs that\u2019s known as \u201cTarget Disk Mode,\u201d and you can read <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/41010-mac-os-101-how-to-boot-and-use-a-mac-in-target-disk-mode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this OWC article<\/a>. )<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this process\u2014known as \u201cShare Disk\u201d or \u201cMac Disk Sharing\u201d\u2014is a bit different on the new M1 Macs due to new security precautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mac-disk-sharing-on-an-m1\">Mac disk sharing on an M1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can access the startup volume on one M1\/Apple Silicon Mac as a drive that appears on another that\u2019s directly connected. However<strong>, <\/strong>for the best results, use a <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/thunderbolt\/thunderbolt-external-drives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thunderbolt 3 SSD<\/a> that has been freshly formatted with APFS and set up with a new installation of macOS 11.1 Big Sur. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/eclecticlight.co\/2020\/12\/22\/booting-an-m1-mac-from-an-external-disk-it-is-possible\/\">Howard Oakley\u2019s writeup<\/a> for details, from which I got the accompanying graphic.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Choose &gt; Shut Down.<\/li><li>Once your Mac is turned off, hold down the power button until you see &#8220;Loading Startup Options.&#8221;<\/li><li>Click Options then click Continue.<\/li><li>Choose an account on the Mac you\u2019re sharing and enter its password, then click Continue.<\/li><li>Choose Utilities &gt; Share Disk.<\/li><li>Select the disk to share (an M1 Mac lets you share any internal or attached hard drive or SSD).&nbsp;<\/li><li>Click Start Sharing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Mac from which you want to access the volume, choose Go &gt; Network, select the Mac in the list that appears, click Connect As in the upper-right corner, select Guest, and click Connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re finished with the mounted Mac volume, eject it, then click Stop Sharing on the sharing Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose &gt; Restart to resume using macOS on that Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
