This series of articles is designed to not only introduce you to new or updated features of Monterey, but to be a reference for readers of The Rocket Yard once <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/75241-deeper-dive-wwdc21-keynote\/\">Monterey<\/a> <\/strong>arrives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently two other posts in this series:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/76834-the-road-to-macos-monterey-focus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Focus<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/76914-the-road-to-macos-monterey-airplay-to-mac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Safari<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, The Road to macOS Monterey takes us to the new <strong>AirPlay to Mac<\/strong> feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sherlock\">Sherlock!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-time Mac users may be familiar with the term \u201c<strong>sherlocking<\/strong>.\u201d This term comes from the early 2000s, when Apple updated its <strong>Sherlock<\/strong> search tool in early versions of Mac OS X to perform the same functions as a third-party app called Watson. That third-party app was developed by Karelia Software as a way of boosting Sherlock\u2019s capabilities.&nbsp;Sherlock has been retired, replaced by <strong>Spotlight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, it appears that Apple sherlocked the functionality of a popular app called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airsquirrels.com\/reflector\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reflector<\/a><\/strong> that allows iPhones and iPads to wirelessly mirror their screens on a Mac.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"140\" height=\"142\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/AirPlay_Icon2.png\" alt=\"The AirPlay Icon\" class=\"wp-image-77013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/AirPlay_Icon2.png 140w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/AirPlay_Icon2-118x120.png 118w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/><figcaption>The AirPlay Icon<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-would-you-want-to-use-airplay-to-mac\">Why Would You Want To Use AirPlay to Mac?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AirPlay to Mac turns a Mac running Monterey into an AirPlay receiver; but why would you want to do this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One popular use case is to mirror an iPhone or iPad screen to a Mac in order to capture the screen on video or to livestream it. This is often useful for creating instructional videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another possible use: watching movies on a big-screen Mac. Let\u2019s say you are visiting a friend and want to watch a movie that you own. Simply AirPlay the video to your friend\u2019s Monterey 27-inch iMac and you get the fun of watching it on a 5K screen with stereo sound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of sound, your Mac has pretty good speakers. It can be used as another AirPlay speaker device for letting you and others listen to music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One more use case: mirroring your Mac screen to another Mac from Control Center. This is extremely useful if you have (for example) a 13-inch MacBook Air and wish to mirror the MBA&#8217;s screen on a 27-inch iMac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-airplay-to-mac-works-in-macos-monterey\">How AirPlay to Mac Works in macOS Monterey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>AirPlay to Mac should be set up by default after your Mac is upgraded to macOS Monterey. If it isn\u2019t, you\u2019ll be able to tell because you won\u2019t see that Mac as an AirPlay \u201ctarget\u201d. In that case, it\u2019s easy to enable the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Launch System Preferences<\/li><li>Click Sharing<\/li><li>At the bottom of the list of Sharing options you\u2019ll see AirPlay Receiver. You can let just the current Mac user send video via AirPlay, allow anyone on your local network to send video (default), or let anyone AirPlay to your Mac. There\u2019s also an option to require a password.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-streaming-content-to-the-mac\">Streaming Content to the Mac<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Streaming a screen, movie, or music to the Mac is easy! Mac are listed under \u201cSpeakers &amp; TVs\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a Mac, the process is almost identical with one caveat: both Macs must be running macOS Monterey.
