And once again, OWC solutions played a key role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class='youtube-player' width='1170' height='659' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qiBrZ1IHjZI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent' allowfullscreen='true' style='border:0;' sandbox='allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation'><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In its second year, the program has partnered again with the legendary baseball organization the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals provided the teenaged storytellers with a venue, voice, and talent to produce great stories in the field. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_Editing_MacBookPro_Cardinals_OWC.jpg\" alt=\"editing on a MacBook\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-working-around-the-pandemic\">Working around the pandemic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the summer of 2020, the coronavirus pandemic threatened to upend plans to launch the program. With a bit of creativity, the use of outdoor spaces, Zoom calls, and social distancing, the student-led group produced fantastic pieces and stories. Cardinals alumni Ozzie Smith and Ricky Horton donated their time and served as interview subjects for the students to gain experience with real-life celebrity talent. The program was a grand slam and is back for 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_Group.jpg\" alt=\"Students learn editing\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-the-cardinals-love-st-louis-summer-stories\">Why the Cardinals love St. Louis Summer Stories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The St. Louis Cardinals are something of a local institution. Despite the MLB team\u2019s smaller market, the Cardinals have the second-highest attendance of all teams in the league. Many Cardinals players grew up, played, and retired in Missouri and actively donate their time to the organization. Cardinal Nation superstars Ted Simmons, David Freese, and Kyle McClellan made themselves available as interview subjects for Summer Stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Louis Summer Stories provides \u201ca great opportunity for students to be able to tell the story to Cardinals fans in the St. Louis community from their perspective,\u201d shares Joe Pfeiffer, Director of Corporate Sales for the Cardinals. \u201cProbably my most fun part of this experience this summer has been just sitting here and watching the interviews.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_Joe_Pfieffer_OWC.jpg\" alt=\"Interview Joe Pfieffer\"\/><figcaption>Joe Pfieffer speaks with Summer Stories participants. Image: Summer Stories<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Steve Douglass is the Stories Leader for St. Louis Summer Stories. \u201cI believe [Summer Stories] will fundamentally change education. To help students identify their story and be able to identify their audience and to be able to construct a visual story.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of Steve\u2019s goals was to employ iPhone cinematography since 95% of his students use a smartphone daily, ensuring that the skills gained through the workshops are retained and accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_Steve_Douglass.jpg\" alt=\"Steve Douglass teaches on set\"\/><figcaption>Steve Douglass shares cinematography tips. Image: Summer Stories<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-an-incredible-opportunity-for-students-to-meet-sports-heroes\">An incredible opportunity for students to meet sports heroes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having exclusive backstage access to the team was not lost on the students. \u201cThank you so much for giving me this opportunity to do all these things that otherwise I don\u2019t think I would ever be able to do.\u201d says Jack Douglass, one of the program\u2019s participants. &nbsp;My favorite experience was to interview the newly inducted Hall of Famer Ted Simmons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Pfieffer concurs. \u201cThey did a great job of their research of Ted Simmons. It was refreshing for him to answer questions that were well thought-out, instead of just off the cuff. Ted Simmons was impressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_Ted_Simmons_OWC.jpg\" alt=\"Students interviewing St. Louis Cardinals\"\/><figcaption>Interviewing St. Louis Cardinal Ted Simmons. Image: Summer Stories<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>David Freese spent time meeting with each student and answered questions about his legendary home run from game 6 in the 2011 World Series. After interviewing Freese, Summer Stories participant Kassia Fundou said, \u201cI learned how important it is to keep believing in myself and pushing for the things I love, even though all the unknown and uncontrollable aspects of life.\u201d She adds that the interview was a highlight of her time at the program. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_David_Freese_Kassia_OWC.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with student\"\/><figcaption>David Freese and Kassia Fundou. Image: Summer Stories<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most difficult part is that telling a story is hard when there\u2019s meaning in it,\u201d says Brett McMillan, Multimedia Manager for the Cardinals. \u201cYou do feel that heaviness as you come in and try to do a representative job of telling a story and of representing the people around you.\u201d Brett showcased the professional media facilities at Busch Stadium and taught students how to conduct interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_Brett_McMillan.jpg\" alt=\"Interviewing St. Louis Cardinal\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Former Cardinals pitcher Kyle McClellan shared his experiences as a professional athlete and inside his community-building projects. Sanjay Callfee shares how he felt interviewing the MLB star. &#8220;Kyle taught me that you can have a huge impact on a community simply by using your platform. His work in Haiti and North County Saint Louis was so inspiring.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyle McClellan operates the charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.braceforimpact46.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brace For Impact 46<\/a>, which renovates homes in need throughout St. Louis. Joe Pfeiffer added, &#8220;Kyle&#8217;s unique. He&#8217;s a St. Louis native, played here, won a World Series championship with the Cardinals, and is doing amazing things in our community through his foundation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_Jack_Douglass_OWC.jpg\" alt=\"Students on set\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-owc-as-technology-partner\">OWC as technology partner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Editing on Final Cut Pro proved to be a professional yet affordable workflow solution for the students. Apple offers heavily discounted software available for students as well as their educators. OWC provided <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/thunderbay-4\/thunderbolt-3-raid-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-speed RAID storage<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/owc-envoy-pro-fx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Envoy Pro FX storage,<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/shop\/thunderbolt\/thunderbolt-docks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thunderbolt Docks<\/a>&nbsp;for the workshops.  One student shared, \u201cI was able to edit and export at the same time. I\u2019m so grateful to OWC by providing this equipment and making a great program even better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/slss_owcdock.jpeg\" alt=\"OWC dock helping\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/St_Louis_Summer_Stories_Ted_Simmons_Final_Cut_Pro.jpg\" alt=\"Student's work on Final Cut Pro\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When asked if Joe Pfieffer and the Cardinals would participate in Summer Stories again, the answer is a resounding yes. The Cardinals media team used stories produced by the students during intermission segments between ends during a game. Pfieffer shared, \u201cWe actually used the content the other night before the game, and it&#8217;s that high level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default aligncenter\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/SKbWAazZx5iFiQkQf93OVcaVwLzMltrjzKN-OvMcr1bU2H5ZR-Ob8Yw24hig1OMN70dJ2VGN2HAIovroyFHM7fELAFXTmuWomTPbhvarGFaXM_A0uJUdb-YXSKcRlC1NSiAFG2xN=s0\" alt=\"Student's work live, in action\"\/><figcaption>Student projects were used before an actual game. Image: Summer Stories<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Steve Douglass thinks that the experience will have a lasting impact on the students, adding that many past participants of the program have enrolled in film colleges around the country, and may not have had the portfolio to do so without Summer Stories. Joe Pfieffer agrees. \u201cCan you tell your story? Because the reality is, if you\u2019re on the job hunt and you\u2019re looking for an opportunity, regardless of the industry you\u2019re selling yourself. You need to be able to tell your story.
