In this article, we\u2019ll show you what has changed with Siri and how to set up some of the new features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the fifth in a series of articles about iOS 15. The other articles published so far include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/78007-ios-15-feature-roundup-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Photos<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/78060-ios-15-feature-roundup-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maps<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/78082-ios-15-feature-roundup-safari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Safari<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/78104-ios-15-feature-roundup-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Weather<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who haven\u2019t yet updated their iPhone or iPod touch to iOS 15, the first article (Photos) includes system requirements and installation instructions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-overview-of-siri-changes-in-ios-15\">Overview of Siri changes in iOS 15<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, Siri processes requests on your iPhone or iPod touch using the <strong>Neural Engine<\/strong>. This provides three benefits to iOS 15 users:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improved security, since your device doesn\u2019t need to send requests to an Apple server for processing.<\/li><li>Faster response time.<\/li><li>No internet connection required for many requests.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>As you use the digital assistant on your device, the speech recognition and understanding of your requests improves. It now learns about the contacts you communicate with the most, becomes familiar with new words you type, and also gains an understanding of topics you read about. All of this knowledge is used to provide better responses to your requests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-siri-sharing\">Siri sharing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to share a photo, web page, Apple News story, Maps location, or content from Apple Music or Podcasts in a Message? Now that happens with a simple verbal query. It can even take screenshots for you now, eliminating the cumbersome \u201cpress power and volume up simultaneously\u201d button dance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siri also checks the context of a conversation to send messages or place phone calls. Speaking of context, it now \u201cremembers\u201d context between your requests, meaning you can refer to something you previously requested.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HomeKit requests are now more flexible. You can request that a HomeKit device be controlled at a specific time (\u201cHey Siri, turn off the bedroom light at 10:30 PM\u201d) or under certain circumstances (\u201cLock the garage door when I leave the house\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have <strong>AirPods<\/strong> or are using <strong>CarPlay<\/strong>, Siri announces notifications like Reminders. For the first time, you can ask Siri what is on your screen. Now let\u2019s look at some of these new features in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-share-items-on-your-screen\">Share items on your screen&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To start with, Siri\u2019s newfound ability to understand context makes it very easy to share items on your iPhone screen with another person via Messages with a simple, \u201cHey Siri, share this with [person\u2019s name]\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re trying to share a weather forecast, a song in Apple Music, a website, a podcast, or a photo, Siri acknowledges your request by saying \u201cAre you ready to send it?\u201d. Third-party app support is expected soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-offline-requests\">Offline requests<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With iOS 15, Siri can do a lot for you without needing an internet connection. That includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Launching apps (\u201cHey Siri, launch Dark Sky\u201d)<\/li><li>Controlling system settings (\u201cHey, Siri, turn on Airplane mode\u201d)<\/li><li>Creating and disabling timers and alarms (\u201cHey, Siri, set a timer for four minutes\u201d)<\/li><li>Controlling Apple Music and Podcasts audio playback (\u201cHey, Siri, play the OWC Radio podcast\u201d)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Being able to do all of these things offline means you\u2019ll use them more often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-siri-still-needs-an-internet-connection\">When Siri still needs an internet connection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, Siri needs to have a cellular data or Wi-Fi connection to complete a task. That includes asking for weather updates, playing streamed content, or sending a message to someone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that case, you&#8217;ll get a friendly reminder that you should be online:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/iOS_15_Siri_Need_Internet.jpeg\" alt=\"iOS 15 Siri internet connection\" class=\"wp-image-78133\" width=\"642\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/iOS_15_Siri_Need_Internet.jpeg 1284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/iOS_15_Siri_Need_Internet-245x120.jpeg 245w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/iOS_15_Siri_Need_Internet-284x139.jpeg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/iOS_15_Siri_Need_Internet-190x93.jpeg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/iOS_15_Siri_Need_Internet-245x120@2x.jpeg 490w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/iOS_15_Siri_Need_Internet-284x139@2x.jpeg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/iOS_15_Siri_Need_Internet-190x93@2x.jpeg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><figcaption>Siri needs an Internet connection to perform some tasks<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Other messages include &#8220;I can help with that when you&#8217;re connected to the internet&#8221; and &#8220;To do that, you&#8217;ll need to be online&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-have-siri-announce-notifications\">Have Siri announce notifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you use CarPlay with your iPhone or have your AirPods in your ears all the time? You&#8217;ll love this new feature in iOS 15. Siri can now announce <em>all<\/em> notifications, not just messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After enabling this feature, all Time-Sensitive notifications are announced from apps when AirPods (or Beats) are connected or you&#8217;re in your car. For notifications that aren&#8217;t time-sensitive, announce them on a per-app basis. Here&#8217;s how to enable Siri notification announcements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1 &#8211; Launch <strong>Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 &#8211; Tap <strong>Notifications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3 &#8211; Under Siri, tap <strong>Announce Notifications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4 &#8211; Tap the switch next to <strong>Announce Notifications<\/strong> to green to enable notification announcements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5 &#8211; Want Siri to announce all notifications from a certain app? Tap the app in the list under &#8220;Announce Notifications From&#8221; and toggle the <strong>Announce Notifications<\/strong> switch to On. You can now ask Siri to perform HomeKit tasks like turning lights on or off, setting alarms, opening or closing blinds, and more at a scheduled time or when you leave or arrive at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to have the lights in your family room turned off at 10 PM tonight? Just ask &#8220;Hey Siri, turn the family room lights off at 10 PM&#8221;. How about having your HomeKit-enabled thermostat heat up the house when you get home tonight? A command like &#8220;Hey Siri, set the temperature to 72 when I get home&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making these requests creates an automation in the Home app. To delete any of these automations, just swipe left on it and tap Delete. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-there-s-more-in-ios-15\">There&#8217;s more in iOS 15<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These tips should help you to use Siri more efficiently.
