macOS Monterey<\/strong> has some amazing new features<\/a>. However, we don’t hear much about the Privacy Report<\/strong> found in the Safari web browser. Safari works behind the scenes to keep you safe from malware and tracking by websites you visit. Let\u2019s take a look at Safari\u2019s Privacy Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not new, just better…<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Safari\u2019s Privacy Report has been around since macOS 11 \u201cBig Sur\u201d. If you use Safari as your web browser, you\u2019re probably using the feature without even knowing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safari and a feature called Intelligent Tracking Protection<\/strong> block information sent out when you visit any website. That information can uniquely identify your Mac and track your web usage. Intelligent Tracking Protection works by using on-device machine learning to block cross-site tracking while still letting websites function as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Mac users probably have no idea that Safari is actively blocking trackers and malware. There\u2019s really only one clue \u2014 a tiny \u201cshield\u201d icon to the left of the Safari address bar (highlighted in red in screenshot below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To see a list of exactly who tried to track you, click \u201cTrackers on This Web Page<\/strong>\u201d. Many of these are advertisers, and you may also see the occasional reference to Google Analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here you can see the specific trackers that were stopped from profiling you<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Many websites use Google Analytics to track traffic and visitor demographics. While that may be innocent information to send to Google, there\u2019s no way to allow only that information to sneak through. Safari blocks it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the pop-up there\u2019s also a small \u201cinfo\u201d button on the right side. Click that, and much more information is available (screenshot below). It\u2019s also accessible by selecting Safari > Privacy Report<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Privacy Report<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Safari\u2019s Privacy Report shows just how many trackers it prevented in the last 30 days for all websites visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why 30 days? When Intelligent Tracking Protection was first added to Safari in 2018, the browser would count how many days elapsed since you clicked \u201cYes\u201d to give a site permission to leave a cookie on your Mac. After 30 days, the Mac now deletes that cookie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manually deleting cookies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you\u2019ve now taken a closer look at the Privacy Report and you don\u2019t like that a particular site placed a lot of cookies on your Mac \u2014 even if you agreed to let them do that. There\u2019s a way to manually manage the cookies on your Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Individual or all cookies can be removed from your Mac<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

1 \u2014 Launch Safari, then select Safari > Preferences<\/strong>
2 \u2014 Select Privacy<\/strong>
3 \u2014 Click Manage Website Data\u2026<\/strong> All of the sites you gave permission to create cookies appear in a list. Click any site you’re concerned about to highlight it.
4 \u2014 Click Remove<\/strong>
5 \u2014 Want to get rid of all of the cookies? Click Remove All<\/strong>.
6 \u2014 Click Done<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t like Privacy Report? Turn it off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I like what Privacy Report and Intelligent Tracking Protection do to keep me and my data safe. If you don\u2019t like that Apple is blocking cookies and preventing cross-site tracking, you can turn it off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
