Safari and Siri have offered translation features previously, but macOS Monterey added a system-wide translation feature. Here’s how to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With it, you can translate text by right-clicking it and selecting Translate<\/em>. You can then copy the result, change the language, or replace the selected text with the translation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

System-wide translation uses Apple\u2019s own translation service (also used in iOS and iPadOS). It\u2019s pretty good, but don\u2019t expect perfect results. Even Apple notes that on-device translation isn\u2019t as effective as online translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, it works on text anywhere including text selected using Apple\u2019s new Live Text feature<\/a>. But more on that in another article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using system-wide translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s how to use the system-wide translation feature:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Select the text you wish to translate and control-click on it.<\/li>
  • Options should appear, including \u201cTranslate.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    \u00b0\u00a0The selected content will be sent to Apple to process the translation. You can choose to always translate offline in System Preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Change the language of translation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • On the pop-up window with the translation, click on the translation language.<\/li>
    • A list of languages will appear. Choose the one you wish the text to be translated to.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Replace the selected text with translated text<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      You can even replace the originally selected text with the translated text:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Select and right-click on text.<\/li>
      • Options will appear.<\/li>
      • Select \u201cTranslate.\u201d<\/li>
      • A popup windows will appear with the translated text. Click on \u201cReplace with Translation.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Using on-device translation packs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Althought it\u2019s not nearly as fast as online translations, you can enhance macOS Monterey\u2019s on-device translation mode by downloading language packs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Go to System Preferences > Language & Region.<\/li>
        • Click on the Translation Languages button in the bottom right of the screen.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
