And I&#8217;m going to do that with something called <strong>Constant Encoding<\/strong>, using an open-source tool called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.handbrake.fr.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Handbrake<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class='youtube-player' width='1170' height='659' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/idcuqIY-bEs?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent' allowfullscreen='true' style='border:0;' sandbox='allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation'><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-quality-not-quantity\">Quality, not quantity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll start with a minute-long 4K\/UHD video that is the type of file you&#8217;d get out of a GoPro or other action camera. Typically, professional encoding tools like Apple Compressor or Adobe Media Encoder, don\u2019t approach encoding in the same way. They focus on how large a file will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I care about is the quality. Instead of focusing on size, I want quality to be the critical factor. Handbrake\/Shutter Encoder and FFMPEG have this capability\u2014and they&#8217;re all free tools!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-choosing-encoding-settings-in-handbrake\">Choosing encoding settings in Handbrake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you bring a video into Handbrake, it&#8217;s easiest to start the process by using one of the presets Handbrake provides. This will guarantee that the resolution and frame rate of your video output matches the source. Handbrake lets you choose encoding settings specifically based on how much quality you want to retain. On the Video Tab, you\u2019ll see a Quality setting. For UHD (3840&#215;2160) video, you can go up to 28.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Handbrake\u2019s default codec, H.264, is excellent, and compatible with nearly every phone and tablet. For higher-quality compression at lower bitrates (reduced file size), you can use HEVC (aka H.265). But keep in mind that it&#8217;s less compatible with older hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final setting that determines the size of your exported video file (and, of course, how long the encoding will take0 is the preset slider for Speed. You should never use Placebo for video you plan to distribute online because that&#8217;s meant just for internal testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-encoding-settings\">My encoding settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At a setting of 23, I got a couple of interesting results. <em>Fast <\/em>with H.264 took 3 minutes, and shrank the file to 105 MB, one-fifth its original size. Not bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1168\" height=\"635\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg5.jpg 1168w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg5-221x120.jpg 221w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg5-284x154.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg5-190x103.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg5-221x120@2x.jpg 442w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg5-284x154@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg5-190x103@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1168px) 100vw, 1168px\" \/><figcaption>My test results<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Fast<\/em> HEVC took 5 minutes and<em> <\/em>reduced the file size to 37 MB. That&#8217;s almost 1\/20th of the file\u2019s original size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tested several other settings, with fairly predictable results comparable to those above, but one result surprised me. <em>Ultrafast<\/em> HEVC took only 2 minutes, but gave me a smaller file than <em>any of the other choices<\/em>. The Ultrafast HEVC file came in at 22MB\u20141\/22nd of the original. It did better than Slow, Slower, or Very Slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>That&#8217;s strange. Ultrafast <\/em>should have been larger than any other choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pushing-the-envelope-for-uhd\">Pushing the envelope for UHD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I did most of my tests at a Quality setting of 23. But since this source was UHD, for my final test, I wanted to push the envelope a little further by increasing my Quality setting to 28, Ultrafast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What did I get?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Quality 28, Ultrafast, Handbrake compressed my 490MB file to 12MB, which means that it was small enough to send it to someone by email. To a video pro, accustomed to working with massive files, that&#8217;s crazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80009\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg6.jpg 950w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg6-230x120.jpg 230w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg6-284x148.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg6-190x99.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg6-230x120@2x.jpg 460w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg6-284x148@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/greenberg6-190x99@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px\" \/><figcaption>My final test: 12 MB for a 1-minute UHD file!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-quality-first\">Quality first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, <strong>Constant Quality<\/strong> encoding prioritizes quality, and output file size is dictated by the speed of the encoding. By using Handbrake\u2014a free, open-source tool\u2014I was able to shrink my video fast, and make it as small as I needed while retaining the quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Footnote: As a media nerd, I&#8217;ll let you know the original was in the H.264 codec, 23.976 fps, at 65 Mb\/s. The final file was in HEVC at 1.5 Mb\/s.
