While there are open-source tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GIMP<\/a> that might fit the bill, they often have not-so-great interfaces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What people generally want is something that comes close to Photoshop&#8217;s feature set without sacrificing usability. And in the last couple of years, two web-based tools have come to my attention: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.photopea.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Photopea.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pixlr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pixlr.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes both of these <em>extra wonderful<\/em> is they run in a browser, meaning that they should work <em>everywhere<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class='youtube-player' width='1170' height='659' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pryJYGgQk-Q?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent' allowfullscreen='true' style='border:0;' sandbox='allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation'><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-photopea-s-photoshop-feel\">Photopea&#8217;s Photoshop feel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first opened Photopea, I was stunned. Not only was it a free photo editor that looked like Photoshop; it used many of the same keyboard shortcuts. <strong>In a browser<\/strong>. <em>Command-N<\/em>? New document. B? Brush tool. M? Marquee. <em>Stunning<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New Document dialog box had a bunch of preset templates along with a stock search of royalty-free imagery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1.jpg\" alt=\"Photopea's document dialog \" class=\"wp-image-80174\" width=\"675\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1.jpg 1350w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1-192x120.jpg 192w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1-284x178.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1-190x119.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1-272x170.jpg 272w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1-192x120@2x.jpg 384w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1-284x178@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea1-190x119@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><figcaption>Photopea&#8217;s New Document dialog<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-limitations-of-browser-based-tools\">Limitations of browser-based tools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One warning: Like most browser-based tools, both Photopea and Pixlr suffer from a lack of autosaving and the overhead of running in a browser. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found these tools perform best when I keep images under 4000&#215;4000\u2014something that Pixlr (below) recommends when you create\/import larger files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember to save&nbsp;your work. If you get disconnected from the internet or reload the tab, your work will disappear. You can save your documents in cloud services, including Google Drive and Dropbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-photoshop-like-keyboard-command\">Photoshop-like keyboard  command<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned earlier, one thing that makes these free tools with Photoshop-like features so easy to use for Photoshop users is the familiar keyboard commands and shortcuts. Here are some of the quick keyboard commands that just worked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>M<\/strong> for the Marquee<\/li><li><strong>D<\/strong> for default colors<\/li><li><strong>B<\/strong> for Brush<\/li><li>Brackets <strong>[ ] <\/strong>to change brush size.<\/li><li><strong>V<\/strong> for the Pointer\/Move tool.<\/li><li><strong>Tab<\/strong> to hide the palettes<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If this feels like Photoshop, it&#8217;s because it <em>really is like Photoshop<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Photopea's photo editor \" class=\"wp-image-80175\" width=\"700\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-scaled.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-202x120.jpg 202w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-284x169.jpg 284w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-190x113.jpg 190w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-1536x912.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-202x120@2x.jpg 404w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-284x169@2x.jpg 568w, https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/photopea2-190x113@2x.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption>The Photopea photo editor&#8217;s unmistakable Photoshop-like look<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Photopea accounts are flat payments\u2014they&#8217;re not automatic subscriptions\u2014but they are on a fixed time limit. They remove the prominent advertising and give more history\/undos.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photopea has become a phenomenal way for me to work when I don&#8217;t have Photoshop handy, or if I don&#8217;t want to spend that $10 a month for a subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-quick-plug-for-pixlr\">A quick plug for Pixlr<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d be remiss if I didn&#8217;t also mention <a href=\"https:\/\/pixlr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pixlr<\/a>, another free photo editor that delivers Photoshop-like features in a browser-based tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pixlr product has two major flavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Pixlr E<\/strong> (for <em>Express<\/em>) is a quick editor. It&#8217;s a heavily template-driven tool with loads of easy tools.
