In the past, Adobe Premiere Pro subtitles have always been a bit fiddly. Creating them has been a complicated, time-consuming process, and a rather frustrating hindrance\u2014particularly at the end of an edit when you\u2019re just about done with the project. Nowadays, you\u2019ll be pleased to know that it\u2019s actually quite a stress-free, streamlined process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Premiere Pro has undergone relatively minor yet significant changes that have really changed the game. With a few clicks, you can now have your whole video transcribed (in multiple different languages) and captioned! With your footage on the timeline. navigate to the <strong>Captions and Graphics<\/strong> tab at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. In the <strong>Text<\/strong> window that appears, click <strong>Transcribe Sequence<\/strong>. Once you\u2019re happy with your chosen settings, go ahead and click <strong>Transcribe<\/strong>. Depending on the length of footage and how fast your internet is, Premiere Pro will take a few moments to transcribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-creating-captions\">Creating captions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To create your captions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. In the <strong>Transcript window <\/strong>that opens in the Source Monitor, you\u2019ll see your transcript. From this, you can go ahead and click <strong>Create captions<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. In the <strong>Create captions<\/strong> dialog, make sure you\u2019ve selected<strong> Create from sequence transcript<\/strong> and refine your settings. I tend to go <strong>single line<\/strong>, <strong>max characters 42<\/strong>, <strong>minimum duration 1.2 seconds<\/strong>. When you\u2019re happy with the settings, click <strong>Create <\/strong>and your captions will appear in a matter of seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-editing-the-captions\">Editing the captions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the playhead, you can scrub through your captions on the timeline. In the Text window on the left, you\u2019ll see how each caption is highlighted as the playhead passes over it. Use this to make any necessary changes to your subtitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Select the Captions track.<\/li><li>To the right of the Program Monitor, you\u2019ll see the <strong>Essential Graphics <\/strong>panel. Click the Edit tab. Here, you can <strong>change the size of the text<\/strong>, <strong>give the subtitles a background<\/strong>, <strong>change the size and opacity of that background,<\/strong> and much more.<\/li><li>Under <strong>Track Style<\/strong>, select <strong>Create Style<\/strong> from the <strong>drop-down menu<\/strong>. You can save the style you\u2019ve created, and this will then be applied to all the captions on your timeline for this sequence.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uses-of-subtitles\">Uses of subtitles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding Adobe Premiere Pro subtitles is a great way to improve the quality of your film. While perfect for translating interviews and for navigating patchy audio in various documentary situations, captions are also proving more and more useful for short-form online content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people now watch social media videos while scrolling through feeds with their sound muted.
