Have you wondered why a video file doesn&#8217;t work in a given player?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To figure this out you\u2019d need a tool that can look inside of the media and get useful information. Enter <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaarea.net\/en\/MediaInfo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MediaInfo<\/a> by MediaArea. I consider this <em>the decoder ring<\/em> for media.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class='youtube-player' width='1170' height='659' src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LtZfjPtePKA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent' allowfullscreen='true' style='border:0;' sandbox='allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation'><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MediaInfo is the industry standard for digging into media files. While I have used other tools for this in the past (Quicktime Player, VLC), MediaInfo is the best cross-platform, open-source tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/mediainfo\/id510620098?mt=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">App Store<\/a> and on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/p\/mediainfo\/9nk81654hhv5#activetab=pivot:overviewtab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Windows Store<\/a>. By getting it from those sources, you&#8217;re getting the latest, verified version from the publisher. And you\u2019re paying them for their hard work. Go to their website if you&#8217;re willing to work with an older version (older GUI)<em> for free<\/em>. In fact, it&#8217;s also available for the various Linux flavors too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you have MediaInfo, what do we need it to do? There are two key areas to identify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, what&#8217;s the <strong>container<\/strong> (that&#8217;s the extension)? And secondly, what is the actual compression type (the <strong>CODEC<\/strong>)? By the way, CoDEC stands for Compression\/DECompression.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just drag a file into its window, and it&#8217;ll show the key information. This view is called the Summary View. You&#8217;ll see what kind of Video Stream (codec) is inside the file on the main screen. If you&#8217;re a data geek (I&#8217;m a film geek most of the time, but a data geek too), you can go to the View Menu &gt; Tree, and it&#8217;ll give you every last thing you&#8217;ve ever wanted to know about the file<em>. <\/em>While there are other views, the first two are the most helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some common containers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>MP4\/Motion Picture Expert Group, 4th revision<\/li><li>MOV\/Quicktime<\/li><li>MXF\/Materials Exchange Format<\/li><li>MKV\/Matroskov Format<\/li><li>AVI\/Audio Video Interview<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All they do is hold videos. Telling me that you have a MOV or a Quicktime file isn&#8217;t enough! It&#8217;s the codec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the most common codecs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>H264\/AVC &#8211; Advanced Video Coding: This is the most common video you&#8217;ll run into. It comes from Phones, action cameras, and screen recordings.<\/li><li>H264\/HEVC &#8211; High-Efficiency Video Coding: This is the <em>newer<\/em> <em>format that iPhone<\/em>s and some cameras can produce.<\/li><li>ProRes &#8211; Apple&#8217;s Professional Resolution: This is used for post-production\/editing.<\/li><li>DNxHR &#8211; Avid&#8217;s codec: This is used for post-production\/editing.<\/li><li>JPEG &#8211; Yes, the Joint Photo Expert Group also has a format flavor that works for video.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are well over 100 codecs out there, but those are some of the most common ones you&#8217;ll see. The Format, the actual <em>Codec ID<\/em>, the colorspace, pretty much all commonly readable metadata that might help when you have a problematic file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MediaInfo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;This is a free tool to help you decode your media files.
