You should be using them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to cover one of my favorite finder hacks for media creators. Best of all, <em>this is all free<\/em>\u2014it&#8217;s using the native search capabilities of macOS. And the <em>TL;DR?<\/em> Your Mac can automatically create lists of files that meet a specific search criteria, so that when you open that folder, <em>only the files you&#8217;re looking for are visible<\/em>. In this tutorial we&#8217;ll create four types of smart folders that can help you find specific types of files:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Folder of New Media this month<\/li><li>All video greater than 4k<\/li><li>All media with the ProRes codec<\/li><li>All the HDR Media.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The very first step is to pick a Finder window with the right starting location to search. It&#8217;s the Plus Button on the right side<\/em>. you if you want it on your sidebar (or not) as per the dialog box. These are Smart Folders\u2014folders that intelligently sort out the material inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I\u2019ve only added two search criteria, you can add as many as you like. Just to get you thinking about creating these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>PDFs from the last week<\/li><li>Images from the last 6 months<\/li><li>Files larger than 3MB in the last 3 days<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Crazy helpful, right<\/em>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-smart-folder-2-find-media-with-greater-than-4k-resolution\"><strong>Smart Folder 2:<\/strong> Find media with greater than 4K resolution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Same start as before:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>New Smart Folder. Kind = Movies<\/li><li>Hit the plus below it and add a second search criteria.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We need pixel size, but <em>it doesn\u2019t exist<\/em>\u2026<em>yet<\/em>. I highly recommend that you scroll through this list at some point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, some sizing references (this is Width x Height)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>HD: 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720<\/li><li>UHD: 3840 x 2160<\/li><li>4K DCI: 4096 x 2160<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I want *Pixel width*, not \u201cPixel height\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019d be 1920 for HD. I could have chosen height, which would be 1080. But <em>width is what we need<\/em>. Here\u2019s why. UHD and 4K material have the same vertical size (2160). But<em> different widths<\/em>. These are saved deep in your user library. But it\u2019s easier to pick one of the sidebar searches and right-click on any Smart folder and choose \u201c<em>Reveal in Finder\u201d<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The default location is: <em>You<\/em>\/Library\/SavedSearches<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They don&#8217;t <em>have to<\/em> live there &#8211; you can put them anywhere on your system. Imagine a folder at the top of a media drive that has ten different searches just for when you need them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-smart-folder-3-prores-files\"><strong>Smart Folder 3: ProRes files<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s build a folder based on <em>codec<\/em>. Me? I use this all the time. ProRes, DNx, even ProRes 4444. (There\u2019s even a search possibility for alpha channels!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Same start as before:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>New Smart Folder. It&#8217;s super helpful to be able to quickly search for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Same start as before:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>New Smart Folder.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Kind = Movies<\/li><li>Hit the plus below it and add a second search criterion.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Other: find Color Profile.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Fill in 2020.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are various ways to identify iPhone generated HDR clips. Color Profile is the most helpful.
