Read receipts for email messages can be handy. But they can also be annoying. With macOS Monterey, you can turn them off in Messages if you don’t want others to know when you saw their text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are read receipts?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A read receipt is a response from someone whom you\u2019ve emailed informing you that the email has been opened. A read receipt has to be requested by the sender, and the recipient doesn\u2019t have to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it\u2019s called a \u201cread receipt,\u201d there\u2019s no guarantee that the message was actually read. The recipient could have opened the email, then trashed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An online post by James Lynden says that read receipts, such as that timestamp on Apple\u2019s Message app, \u201care the object of a lot of frustration.\u201d There are blogs<\/a> and articles<\/a> all over<\/a> the net complaining about the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to turn off read receipts in Messages for Mac<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you find read receipts annoying, it\u2019s easy to turn \u2018em off in macOS Monterey. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Launch Messages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Click Preferences.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 <\/strong>In the window that appears, click Messages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 <\/strong>Uncheck Send read receipts<\/strong> toward the bottom of the window. If you decide later that you want read receipts enabled, check Send read receipts<\/strong> toward the bottom of the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 <\/strong>Exit the Preferences window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to selectively enable\/disable read receipts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These steps turns off the feature entirely. However, if you want to enable\/disable read only for certain folks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Open Messages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 <\/strong>Click on the contact for which you want to change the read receipts setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Click the Info<\/strong> icon in the top right corner of the message window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
