Are you using Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, or Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve?&nbsp;Are you looking to upgrade your lab with new systems?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-well-25-new-imacs-cost-52-475-in-november-of-2022\">Well, 25 new iMacs cost $52,475 in November of 2022.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Ouch<\/em><\/strong><em>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A lab of 25 iMacs from 2017 will cost over fifty thousand dollars to replace. <\/em>That\u2019s a <strong><em>painful<\/em><\/strong> purchase for any school. That number is based on 2022 prices for a new 2022 M1 24\u201d iMac with 16GB RAM &amp; a 1TB SSD &#8211; a cost of $2,099 per system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-could-we-spend-50-000-on-systems-sure\">Could we spend $50,000 on systems? Sure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2026I could save 20%<\/em>, buy half those systems and upgrade the rest, especially those systems that aren\u2019t really well configured<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026<em>I could save 50%<\/em> (or more) and focus on getting the best configuration possible on my existing hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-is-that-possible\">How is that possible?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your lab has Macs manufactured between 2015 and 2020, <em>upgrading<\/em> the system will likely provide a better ROI than <em>buying new ones<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check your systems: Is any of this true?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Macintosh shows an Intel GPU under <em>About this Mac <\/em>(look at eGPUs)<\/li><li>Long boot times or slow switching between apps? We add all the upgrades possible for a 2017 21\u201d iMac. RAM, SSD, and an eGPU<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>32GB of Ram: $99<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2TB NVMe SSD: $279<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>eGPU with the AMD Radeon RX 6600 Card: $699<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Total Upgrade cost per system: $1077<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upgrading your lab of 25 systems? $26,925<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Amount of money saved: <\/em><strong><em>$25,550<\/em><\/strong><em>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s assuming that you <em>need<\/em> to upgrade the RAM and you <em>need<\/em> to upgrade to an SSD. If your systems are set there, then the biggest benefit for <em>Media Labs<\/em> is going to be <em>just an eGPU<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-these-upgrades-do\">What do these upgrades do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each upgrade has different impacts, and again, <em>not every system needs these upgrades<\/em>. That was a <em>worst-case scenario.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at what each upgrade functionally does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-smart-upgrade-1-egpus\">Smart upgrade 1: eGPUs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An external GPU is a thunderbolt 3 box with a higher-performing Graphics Card, such as the AMD Radeon 6600 XT.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While an eGPU doesn\u2019t help Excel or Safari much, it <strong>helps professional video tools<\/strong>, specifically in the following areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>* Systems with no discrete GPU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Scaling of footage (upscaling, downscaling, using AI systems)<\/li><li>Video Noise Reduction<\/li><li>Rendering and export of materials with scale\/color changes<\/li><li>Color work (color conversions, grading)<\/li><li>Motion Graphics in 3D space with\/without motion blur<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>OWC commissioned <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/84070-is-an-egpu-worth-it-for-mac-users-we-ran-the-tests-heres-what-you-need-to-know\/\">a series of practical tests LINKED HERE<\/a>. These are examples where eGPUs really made a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-compare-your-lab-systems-to-the-test-systems-in-that-article-for-the-best-understanding-of-egpu-benefits\"><em>Compare your lab systems to the test systems in that article for the best understanding of eGPU benefits.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Some highlights:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><\/strong>An iMac upscaling video from SD to HD using Topaz Video Enhance AI saw a reduction in render time from 3 hours and 56 minutes to 22 minutes (SD to HD conversion of interlaced material)<\/li><li><strong><\/strong>A MacMini performs better in an Apple Motion Project. From&nbsp; 1 frame per second to 19 frames per second (Oscillating a circle in 3D with a motion blur)<\/li><li><strong><\/strong>A Macbook Pro saw a reduction in export time from 21 minutes to 4 minutes (Scaling UHD materials to HD along with an HDR to SDR conversion in Adobe Premiere Pro.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-smart-upgrade-2-slow-startup-hard-drives-vs-ssds\">Smart upgrade 2: Slow startup- Hard drives vs. SSDs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest slowdowns occurs with systems that have spinning disks or hybrid (fusion) drives. Typically they have slow startup times and will often pause between applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Video editing tools require fast SSDs; otherwise, they inevitably have bottlenecks in performance. This is why OWC suggests making sure your existing systems have SSD drives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helping that further: At least 16GB of RAM &#8211; and with tools like Adobe After Effects, the more RAM, the better.
