Apple really, really wants you to get all your Mac apps from the Mac App Store. But the tech giant is smart enough to know that we\u2019re not always going to do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you try to download an app that\u2019s not from Apple\u2019s store, you\u2019re likely to see this message: \u201cThe app is not from the Mac App Store.\u201d This means that it hasn\u2019t been reviewed by Apple. However, even the Mac maker acknowledges that this doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that there\u2019s something wrong with the app. You can choose to override your security settings and open the app anyway. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 In the Finder on your Mac, locate the app you want to open. (Most apps can be found in the Applications folder.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Control-click the app, then choose Open from the shortcut menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Click Open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The app is now saved as an exception to your security settings, and you can open it in the future by double-clicking it, just as you can any authorized app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also change which apps can open on your Mac in Privacy & Security settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Click Privacy & Security in the sidebar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you can choose whether to allow your Mac to download apps from: \u201cApp Store\u201d or \u201cApp Store and identified developers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should be good to go \u2014 UNLESS you try to download an app that isn\u2019t from the Mac App Store or from a developer identified by Apple as safe. If you do, you\u2019ll likely get \u201cmacOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should proceed with caution if you try and install such an app. However, if you do and run into the problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Choose Apple menu \uf8ff > System Settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Click Privacy & Security in the sidebar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
