The way it works with Macs running Apple Silicon\u2014those with Apple&#8217;s own M-Series systems on a chip (SOC)\u2014is different than the procedure on older, Intel-based Macs. In this article, we&#8217;ll guide you through the differences and how to get your M-Series Mac into recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-apple-silicon\">What is Apple Silicon?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting with certain models introduced in late 2020,&nbsp;Apple began the Mac\u2019s&nbsp;transition from Intel processors to&nbsp;its own designed SOCs or chips (Apple silicon).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Apple M1 chip was the first Apple Silicon chip to launch, and has been installed inside the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac. The M1 Pro and M1 Max chips launched in October 2021 as more powerful alternatives to the M1, and were offered in the MacBook Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then we&#8217;ve seen the release of two more M-Series generations: M2 and M3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late 2023 update of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros are available with either the <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/87048-apple-unveils-m3-m3-pro-m3-max-chips-with-scary-graphics-performance-leap\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"87048\">M3 Pro<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/88810-a-pros-review-of-the-apple-macbook-pro-m3-max-breakneck-speed-and-a-fun-killing-fan\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"88810\">M3 Max<\/a> chips. The <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/86027-mac-studio-becomes-even-more-powerful-with-new-m2-max-and-m2-ultra-chips\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"86027\">M2 Ultra processor<\/a> is the most powerful processor in the range yet, and is found inside both the <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/86027-mac-studio-becomes-even-more-powerful-with-new-m2-max-and-m2-ultra-chips\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"86027\">Mac Studio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/eshop.macsales.com\/blog\/86390-just-who-is-this-new-mac-pro-for-anyway\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"86390\">Mac Pro <\/a>desktops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-macos-recovery\">What is macOS Recovery?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>macOS Recovery is part of the built-in recovery system of your Mac.&nbsp;You can start up from macOS Recovery and use its utilities to recover from certain software issues or take other actions on your Mac such as using Disk Utility to wipe your Mac&#8217;s main drive in order to perform a clean install of macOS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The utilities in macOS Sierra\u2019s macOS Recovery can help you restore from Time Machine, reinstall macOS, get help online, repair or erase a hard disk, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-macos-recovery-on-an-apple-silicon-mac\">macOS Recovery on an Apple Silicon Mac<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While booting into recovery on Intel Macs required powering on the computer and then immediately pressing CMD+R, the process differs on new Apple Silicon Macs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To boot an Apple Silicon Mac into Recovery Mode:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 On your Mac, choose Apple menu&nbsp; &gt; Shut Down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights are off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Press and hold the power button on your Mac until \u201cLoading startup options\u201d appears on the display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Click Options, then click Continue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 If asked, select a volume to recover, then click Next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Select an administrator account, then click Next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Enter the password for the administrator account, then click Continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Recovery app appears in the menu bar, you can choose from a variety of&nbsp; options in the window or the menu bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use macOS Recovery with Bluetooth input devices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need to pair a Bluetooth keyboard, trackpad, or mouse with your Mac when you start up in macOS Recovery, follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 On your Mac, choose Apple menu &gt; Shut Down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Wait for your Mac to shut down completely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Press and hold the power button on your Mac until \u201cLoading startup options\u201d appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 When the system volume and the Options button appear, press the power button three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Use Bluetooth Setup Assistant to pair your Bluetooth accessories with your Mac.<br \/><em>(You won\u2019t<\/em> see Bluetooth Setup Assistant if you already have an input device connected.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Select an administrator account, then click Next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b0 Enter the password for the administrator account, then click Continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Recovery app appears in the menu bar, you can choose any of the available options in the window or the menu bar.
