The Voice Control feature in macOS Sonoma lets you control your Mac entirely with voice. The latest version improves on the previous Enhanced Dictation feature using the Siri speech recognition engine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To enable Voice Control:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Open System Settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choose Accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click Voice Control on the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Guide will teach you: how to get started; how to use dictation for editing text; and how to use dictation to move around your Mac\u2019s display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make it easier to know whether Voice Control heard your phrase as a command, you can turn on \u201cPlay sound when command is recognized\u201d in Voice Control settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voice Control recognizes the names of many apps, labels, controls, and other onscreen items, so you can navigate by combining those names with certain commands. Here are some examples as provided by Apple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Open Pages: \u201cOpen Pages.\u201d Then create a new document: \u201cClick New Document.\u201d Then choose one of the letter templates: \u201cClick Letter. Click Classic Letter.\u201d Then save your document: \u201cSave document.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Start a new message in Mail: \u201cClick New Message.\u201d Then address it: \u201cJohn Appleseed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b0 Restart your Mac: \u201cClick Apple menu. Click Restart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Number and name overlays<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can use number and name overlays to quickly interact with parts of the screen that Voice Control recognizes as clickable, such as menus, checkboxes, and buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can enable overlays by clicking the Overlay button and choosing whether to item numbers, item names, or use a number grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can click the Commands button to see the various voice commands you can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can click the Vocabulary button to see the add your own vocabulary words to Voice Control (and delete \u2018em later if you wish to do so).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Enable
Enable overlays.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

With this done, to turn on item numbers, say \u201cShow numbers.\u201d Then just say the number to click it. To turn off item numbers, say \u201cHide numbers.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To turn on item names, say \u201cShow names.\u201d To click a name, say \u201cClick\u201d and the name. To turn off item names, say \u201cHide names.\u201d This feature requires macOS Sonoma or later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enable grid overlays, you can use \u2018em to interact with parts of your Mac\u2019s  screen that don’t have a control, or that Voice Control doesn’t recognize as clickable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say \u201cShow grid\u201d to show a numbered grid on your screen, or \u201cShow window grid\u201d to limit the grid to the active window. Say a grid number to subdivide that area of the grid, and repeat as needed to continue refining your selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To click the item behind a grid number, say \u201cClick\u201d and the number. Or say \u201cZoom in\u201d and the number to zoom in on that area of the grid, then automatically hide the grid. You can also use grid numbers to drag a selected item from one area of the grid to another: \u201cDrag 3 to 14.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To hide grid numbers, say \u201cHide numbers.\u201d To hide both numbers and grid, say \u201cHide grid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dictation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Voice Control option also lets you dictate text. When the Mac\u2019s cursor is in a document, email message, text message, or other text field, you can dictate continuously.
