There are lots of reasons you might want to have the image content turned into text:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A URL embedded in an image.<\/li><li>Digitizing an old diary or journal.<\/li><li>An excerpt or quote that is a too tedious to type in by hand.<\/li><li>Grabbing a search phrase as text.<\/li><li>Ingredients on a product label.<\/li><li>Pre-internet materials.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In macOS, it is now fast and easy to grab text from an image<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes you may be working with a document such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/macperformanceguide.com\/blog\/2024\/20240301_0800-HowTo-CopyTextFromProtectedPDF.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/macperformanceguide.com\/blog\/2024\/20240301_0800-HowTo-CopyTextFromProtectedPDF.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">password-protected PDF<\/a> that does not allow copying selected text. Without violating copyright laws, the doctrine of fair use allows small excerpts for quotes and such. But what can you do if the <strong>won\u2019t allow copy\/paste of even a single word<\/strong>? Easy\u2014screen shot a small portion, open up macOS <strong>Preview<\/strong> and create a new window; it will contain the screen capture, which can then be used to select the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-extracting-text-from-an-image\">Extracting text from an image<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>MacOS is not all that helpful at time in term of usable text formatting.  For example, it is not too bright about columnar text or making it tab-delimited for use in a spreadsheet. But this is a darn sight better than typing it in by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-1-view-the-image\">Step 1: View the image<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Text extraction works in all sorts of places, though not in an image editor like Photoshop.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viewing an image for text selection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Select it in the Finder, hit the spacebar\u2014a preview will appear.  <\/li><li>Drag the image to the Safari icon in the Dock\u2014a window with the image will open.<\/li><li>Drag the image to Preview\u2014a window with the image will open.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-select-the-text-and-paste-it\">Step 2: Select the text and paste it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Easy peasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-8b7a7dab-081c-4b62-8a4d-81a7c3337091\"><li>Place the mouse cursor near the first letter of the start of the text, then click. The cursor should change into a text cursor, indicating that selection is now possible.<\/li><li>Drag-select the desired text, which should show as highlighted\/selected.<\/li><li>Use use <strong>Edit =&gt; Copy<\/strong> (cmd-C) to copy the text. You should see highlighting as the text is selected<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Paste the clipboard into a document to see the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TIP: You can also have macOS read the selected text aloud to you by right-clicking and choosing Speech => Start Speaking. You will get a primitive robotic Apple voice (here in 2024 in the age of AI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-try-it-out\">Try it out!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please view this article in Apple Safari, this might or might not work on other browsers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are several images that you can try out the image to text feature on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/macperformanceguide.com\/blog\/2024\/images\/2024-0609-NoDoubleDippingDad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"358\"\/><figcaption>Caramel Sauce Warning by Concerned Daughter<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted to look up my lawn mower by model number.  You should be able to select both lines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/macperformanceguide.com\/blog\/2024\/images\/2024-0609-LawnMowerModel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"143\"\/><figcaption>Lawn mower model number<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/diglloyd.com\/Tigger\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/diglloyd.com\/Tigger\" target=\"_blank\">Tigger<\/a> doesn\u2019t much like dogs, but loves these <a href=\"https:\/\/windinmyface.com\/blog\/2024\/20240609_1330-Tigger-minnows.html\" data-type=\"URL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minnows<\/a> even more than <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/windinmyface.com\/blog\/2020\/20200913_0845-cats-love-duck-fat.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/windinmyface.com\/blog\/2020\/20200913_0845-cats-love-duck-fat.html\" target=\"_blank\">duck fat<\/a>. You should be able to select everything from \u201cVE\u201d at top to \u201cNet Wt 2.5oz&#8230;\u201d at bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/macperformanceguide.com\/blog\/2024\/images\/2024-0609-FreezeDriedTreatsForDogs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"664\" height=\"637\"\/><figcaption>Tigger begs for Minnows<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scanning-old-papers-etc\">Scanning old papers, etc.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I wondered if I could turn an old high school paper I had written into text.   First I scanned my old paper, then I tried grabbing the text. Below, a cropped portion of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Results: not so great<\/strong>, with inappropriate line breaks. This is <strong>not<\/strong> a great solution for more than a small amount of text. AI ought to make short work of this, but Apple lags in doing anything useful with it; it\u2019s a great example of how hype precedes real utility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>\u201cThe Evolution of a Management Policy for<br \/>the Wisconsin Deer Herd, 1800-1981. Only today has the Wisconsin deer herd reached a stable pop- ulation in balance with its mortality factors of hunting, car kills, poaching and starvation.
