One of Apple\u2019s biggest phone upgrades this fall isn\u2019t flashy hardware\u2014it\u2019s peace and quiet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In iOS 26, the Phone app adds more ways to stop annoying spam calls through Call Screening, deeper call identification, and new Unknown\/Spam filters so you can keep the scammers at arm\u2019s length without missing out on contact from real people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a step-by-step guide to getting the most out of Apple\u2019s new call screening features in iOS 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Turn on caller ID<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

iOS 26 can identify incoming callers using Apple\u2019s Business Connect data, your carrier, and any supported third-party ID apps you\u2019ve installed (Hiya, Truecaller, etc.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Open Settings on iPhone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Tap Apps \u2192 Phone \u2192 Call Blocking & Identification<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Enable Business Call Identification<\/strong> and any Call Identification apps you trust. This improves the on-screen info you see before you decide to pick up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2: Screen unknown numbers (the new iOS 26 trick)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Call Screening puts a virtual assistant between you and unknown callers. It silently answers your iPhone in the background, asks the caller to state their name and reason for calling, then shows you the response so you can decide to accept, ignore, or send to voicemail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Settings \u2192 Apps \u2192 Phone \u2192 Screen Unknown Callers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Choose one of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Never<\/strong> \u2013 no screening; your iPhone rings as usual.<\/li>
  • Ask Reason for Calling<\/strong> \u2013 Call Screening on.<\/li>
  • Silence<\/strong> \u2013 unknown numbers are sent straight to voicemail and listed in Recents. \u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Apple\u2019s guide notes Siri speaks in your iPhone\u2019s default language while screening; if you need to adjust language\/region, change it in Settings \u2192 General \u2192 Language & Region<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Troubleshooting tip<\/strong>: A few early upgraders report Ask Reason for Calling behaves inconsistently when Low Power Mode is on; turning it off restored screening for them. (Anecdotal, but worth a try.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Step 3: Auto-filter Unknown and Spam calls <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    iOS 26 adds clear Unknown and Spam buckets to keep junk out of your main call list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Settings \u2192 Apps \u2192 Phone<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Toggle Unknown Callers<\/strong> (moves unfamiliar numbers out of Recents) and Spam<\/strong> (silences suspected spam\/fraud to voicemail and files it under Spam). \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When something legitimate gets caught: open Phone, tap the Filter button, choose Unknown Callers<\/strong>, then Mark as Known<\/strong> to whitelist it for next time. You can also revert a number to Unknown later from Contacts \u2192 Other Known \u2192 Mark as Unknown<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Step 4: Block (and unblock) specific numbers and report voicemail spam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    To block a specific contact outright: open Phone \u2192 Contacts \u2192 [contact] \u2192 Block Contact<\/strong>. To unblock later: Settings \u2192 Apps \u2192 Phone \u2192 Blocked Contacts \u2192 Edit \u2192 Unblock<\/strong>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Apple has also added the ability in iOS 26 to report voicemails as spam. To do this using the Unified Phone layout: Phone \u2192 Calls \u2192 Tap a Voicemail \u2192 Report Spam<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Step 5: Where to find filtered calls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
