The new AirTag features the U2 Ultra Wideband chip, improved Bluetooth, and a louder speaker\u2014a mix of improvements that add up to finding things faster.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Apple just announced the next generation AirTag, and at a glance it looks\u2026 exactly like the current AirTag released back in 2021. But looks can be deceiving and that is certainly the case here as Apple has made some meaningful improvements to the AirTag that should help you spend less time looking for whatever is lost. Here are the key changes you need to know about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Precision Finding Now works from farther away<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The original AirTag uses Apple\u2019s U1 Ultra Wideband chip to enable Precision Finding. That\u2019s the turn-by-turn-like mode the Find My app can enter where an on-screen arrow with distance readout appear to help you track something down.\u00a0The new AirTag moves to Apple\u2019s second-generation U2 Ultra Wideband chip, which Apple says allows Precision Finding to work when you are up to 50% further away from an AirTag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compatibility note<\/strong>: Apple says improved Precision Finding for the new AirTag works when it\u2019s paired with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 or later (excluding iPhone 16e).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Precision Finding comes to Apple Watch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With the new AirTag you can now initiate Precision Finding searches from your Apple Watch. Specifically, Apple Watch Series 9 or later or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later can guide you to an AirTag with Precision Finding (with the required watchOS version).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new AirTag is noticeably louder<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apple says the new AirTag\u2019s internals have been redesigned to allow for a speaker that is 50% pounder than before. Apple says the lounder speaker and \u201cdistinctive new chime\u201d mean you should be able to hear the new AirTag from up to twice as far away as the first generation AirTag.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bluetooth range is improved too<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new AirTag also includes an upgraded Bluetooth chip that expands the range at which items can be located.\u00a0This expands the range in which Find My can lock onto a device before you get close enough for Precision Finding can kick in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What hasn\u2019t changed<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  • Same form factor, so it works with existing key rings, holders, and other accessories.<\/li>
  • CR2032 user-replaceable battery <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Should you upgrade if you already have AirTags?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    You\u2019ll get the most value from the new AirTag if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • You frequently use Precision Finding and want it to kick in sooner<\/li>
    • You often misplace items in far away or cluttered spots like bags or couches where the louder speaker will save you time.<\/li>
    • You like the idea of finding tags from your Apple Watch instead of needing to pull out your iPhone. \u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      If you mainly use AirTag for \u201cFind My network recovery\u201d (like tracking luggage across town) and your current tags are doing the job, the core concept is the same. The new model is about making the final 30 feet faster and less annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Pricing, availability, and requirements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Apple is keeping pricing the same:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • $29 for one AirTag<\/li>
      • $99 for a four-pack<\/li>
      • Free engraving when ordering through Apple  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
