Apple continued its busy March with a bit of a surprise announcement. The company has finally refreshed its premium over-ear headphones with AirPods Max 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new cans get Apple\u2019s H2 chip, bringing them up to date with the AirPods Pro 3. The result is a meaningful leap in Active Noise Cancellation performance, a higher-fidelity listening experience, and an entirely new roster of intelligent features. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

AirPods Max 2 are priced at $549. Pre-orders open March 25, with availability beginning early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a breakdown of everything that\u2019s new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Active Noise Cancellation: Up to 1.5x More Effective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The improvement most will care about with AirPods Max 2 is better ANC. Apple says the H2 chip and new computational audio algorithms allow AirPods Max 2 to deliver noise cancellation that\u2019s up to 1.5x more effective than the first generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transparency Mode also gets a refresh. A new digital signal processing algorithm, optimized specifically for H2 and the AirPods Max microphone array, makes Transparency sound more natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audio Quality: Lossless via USB-C and a New Amplifier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

AirPods Max 2 also feature a new high dynamic range amplifier designed to deliver cleaner audio while preserving the sonic character of the originals, Apple says. Plus, Spatial Audio content should be improved across the board, with Apple citing better instrument localization, more consistent bass, and more natural-sounding midrange and high frequencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more significant development for audiophiles, however, is that AirPods Max 2 support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio over USB-C. Apple is going so far as to frame this as a professional-grade capability, noting that musicians can now use AirPods Max throughout their entire Logic Pro workflow in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking. That\u2019s a claim no other headphone can currently make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple says the new AirPods Max 2 also feature reduced wireless audio which should improve the experience for gamers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Intelligent Features<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The AirPods Max have been lagging behind the AirPods Pro for years when it comes to number of features due to the lack of the H2 chip in Apple\u2019s over-the-ear headphones. Here\u2019s a list of what\u2019s available now that H2 is onboard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Conversation Awareness<\/strong> \u2014 Detects when you start speaking and lowers media volume while reducing background noise so you can have a conversation without removing the headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Live Translation<\/strong> \u2014 Powered by Apple Intelligence, this feature enables real-time in-person translation across supported languages. Requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Voice Isolation<\/strong> \u2014 H2-powered computational audio prioritizes your voice on calls while suppressing ambient noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
