Following months of beta availability, Apple today officially released iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 Golden Gate, bringing its latest generation of software updates to everyone on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While last year\u2019s updates introduced a bold new UI direction with Liquid Glass, this year is more about refinement. Apple has spent its development time with OS 27 polishing the new interface elements, addressing some of its rougher edges, improving performance and reliability, and making the experience more consistent across its platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, each platform is taking a significant step forward with Apple Intelligence and the long-awaited next generation of Apple\u2019s voice assistant: Siri AI. The result is an update cycle that may not look as dramatically different as OS 26 did, but brings some substantial and welcome changes, improved performance, and a truly useful Siri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A More Refined Liquid Glass Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Liquid Glass remains Apple\u2019s visual language across its platforms, but OS 27 gives users more control over how it looks. iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 introduce a slider that allows you to adjust the effect from more transparent to more heavily tinted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Mac, Apple has gone further with redesigned app icons, refreshed window controls, more consistent window corner radii, and cleaner menus. Notably, Apple has also backed away from some of the icon-heavy menus introduced in macOS Tahoe, making them easier to scan again while also bringing back the classic orb-like, polished glass look of the stoplight buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performance and reliability were a major focus as well. Apple says users should see improvements ranging from faster AirDrop transfers and app launches to better search, photo loading, Spotlight indexing, networking, animations, and external-display behavior depending on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iOS 27: Siri AI Arrives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The headline addition to iOS 27 is Apple\u2019s revamped Siri. Siri AI can now use personal context from information such as messages, emails, and photos, understand what is currently displayed on screen, and take more sophisticated actions across apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been running the OS 27 beta on all of my Apple devices and I can confidently say that Siri AI is not just a massive improvement over the old Siri, it’s also a genuinely useful AI assistant. The personal context features work very well and Siri has surprised me with the breadth of knowledge Apple has baked in here. I have gone to outsourcing all of my general inquiries to Google and ChatGPT to near exclusive use of Siri AI. It’s not perfect, but it is very good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can access Siri AI via a long press of the power button or through the pull-down gesture from the Home Screen that has in previous versions of the operating system been used for Spotlight search. Apple has merged Siri with Spotlight search, allowing you to launch apps, find documents, and ask Siri to take action or answer questions. Plus, the Siri\/Spotlight search is also available by pulling down from the Dynamic Island, making the gesture quickly available across all apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has also added a dedicated Siri app that allows you to interface with Siri like any other AI chat bot while giving you a place where you can revisit and continue chats. The updated Visual Intelligence feature expands into the Camera app as well, alllowing you to ask Siri about objects and scenes through the viewfinder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photos receives several new AI-powered editing capabilities, including an improved Clean Up tool for removing unwanted objects, Extend for generating content beyond an image\u2019s original borders, and Spatial Reframing for changing a photo\u2019s composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safari can now automatically organize tabs by topic, while a new Notify Me feature can monitor webpages and alert you to changes such as price drops or products coming back into stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other practical improvements include separate alarm and timer volume controls, Custom EQ for AirPods, expanded parental controls, and updates across accessibility features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

iPadOS 27: more Mac-like, with Siri AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many of iOS 27\u2019s biggest additions carry over to iPadOS 27, including the new Siri AI experience and updated Apple Intelligence features. As with iOS 27, Siri AI can be instantly accessed the same way Spotlight has been accessed in the past\u2014by pressing Command+Space on your keyboard\u2014and now by pulling down from the center of the top edge of the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple is also continuing its effort to make the iPad better suited to desktop-style workflows. iPadOS 27 can display app names in the status bar, and users now have the option to keep the menu bar permanently visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has made updates throughout Messages, Notes, Photos, Calendar, Mail, Reminders, Maps, Safari, and Apple Music, alongside expanded Screen Time and parental controls. The release also includes a variety of system-level bug fixes and performance improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

macOS 27 Golden Gate: AI takes center stage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the Mac, Apple Intelligence becomes much more deeply integrated into macOS. The new Siri gets its own Mac app with conversation history, file and image attachments, voice input, search, and pinned conversations. As with iPadOS 27, Siri can also be accessed via the Command+Space shortcut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siri can also work with information on your Mac and interact with supported apps through Apple\u2019s App Intents framework. A new \u201cAsk Siri\u201d option when right clicking lets you select text, images, or files and immediately ask Siri to analyze, rewrite, summarize, or otherwise work with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visual Intelligence gets a particularly useful Mac implementation: press Command-Shift-Space and you can select a region of your screen to ask Siri about virtually anything displayed there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safari adds the same Notify Me feature found on iPhone, automatic tab organization, and even the ability to describe an extension you want in natural language and have Apple Intelligence create it. Shortcuts can similarly build automations based on a plain-language description of what you want to accomplish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apple has also improved external-display support, AirDrop, Spotlight, Mail search, iCloud Photos syncing, Mission Control, Spaces, and network file browsing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
